So, if I get this right, Mary Ann Eady was an illegitimate child who had 2 illegitimate children, Walter & Rose, then Rose had illegitmate children? You're not going to have any fathers in your tree!

Hi again thanks for all the help everyone! I an off now till tomorrow. I hope the father was made up as he is being very elusive. Just to put the cat among the whatsits,
I have the marriage cert for Mary ann Eady to Jacob whittle 21/04/1882 (he was her lodger) and Mary ann Eady does not have a father on her marriage cert at all. My brain is starting to hurt

As Kath says, I think the father James Eady, deceased was a made-up name to hide his illegitimacy. I've got a few cases like that in my tree, I'm sure most of us do!

Oh Kathleen,
the problem with my mother of Walter Eady, if she was Mary Ann Eady as I always thought, and unmarried at the time she had her children, the James Eady Decd on the marriage cert would not have the same surname?

Dianad

Dianad Report 8 Jan 2010 19:16

Hi all again, thanks for replies, I hope the Walter on the 1901 census is the right one as that is the one I have always thought it was. Anyway the Cert definately says 21 years very clearly, but my problem is the father as James Eady? my only thought now is he obviously must have been alive before Walter was born :-) so perhaps someone could find James on the 1871 census? for me please?
I hate it when you are sure you have the right family line and one certificate thows a spanner in the works!
I do agree however that the age on the cert could be wrong if someone lied, for whatever reason. Going back to my earlier research, the walter I had had a sister rose/roseanna whom I thought he lived with until he got married, and I thought his mother was mary ann eady who was unmarried until many years after she had her children. Who is this James Eady Decd???? father of Walter

This seems to be the same Walter in the 1881 census:-

Name: Walter Eady
Age: 13
Estimated birth year: abt 1868
Relation: Son
Mother's Name: Mary A.
Gender: Male
Where born: Melford, Suffolk, England
Civil parish: Long Melford
County/Island: Suffolk
Country: England
Street Address: Chapel Green

Jacob Whittle 31 - lodger, Cocoa Mat Maker

Source Citation: Class: RG11; Piece: 1829; Folio: 79; Page: 6; GSU roll: 1341443.

I wonder if Walter just "made up" a father on his marriage certificate to hide the fact that he was illegitimate?

1891 census
Cock & bell Lane, Melford, Suffolk

Oops! Sorry, Kath, didn't realize you'd already posted that. I'll leave it for confirmation.

Margaret,

That one looks like the same person as I found in the 1891 census.

Jonesey,

Could the age on the marriage certificate actually say 27 rather than 21 - they sometimes look similar depending on how they are written.

This looks like them but Walter's age is wrong:
1901 census
Hall St., St. Mary's , Melford, Sussex
Walter Eady, head, 32, labourer at chemical works, born Long Melford
Sarah, wife, 25, born Glemsford
Emely, dau, 6, born Long Melford
Fred, son, 3, born "
Arthur, son, 2, born "

KathleenBell Report 8 Jan 2010 18:58

There is this birth at around the right time and right registration district (for Long Melford):-

Name: Walter Eady
Year of Registration: 1876
Quarter of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec
District: Sudbury
County: Essex, Suffolk
Volume: 4a
Page: 495

You could order it using the father's name James as a reference checking point - that way if the father is not James then they will refund £4 of the £7 cost.

I would always take the age on a marriage certificate with a pinch of salt. In short - people lied. My grandmother added 5 years to her age and my grandfather took 3 years off his age - and miraculously a 19 year age gap between them seemed like only 11.

Hi all, thanks for the replies!
Kathleen Bell, you have found the Walter Eady that I found last year, now I have bought his marriage certificate all my research is up in the air as the certificate says his age is 21 in 1896 when he married which makes his DOB 1876? and the marriage certificate says his father is James Eady Decd, if I can find a James Eady, then I might get back on the right trail, maybe I should be trying to find the Death of James? anyway Kathleen the witnesses on the cert were Fred Ambrose, and Rosa Newman. Walter Eady married Sarah Ann Newman 04/08/1896, Sarah was also 21 and her Father was Daniel Newman, he was an Engine Driver. Sarah was born in Glemsford. I seem to have Sarah's family ok, But my Eady family line is now all confused, I have never had a James as the father before, my research had a different Walter Eady with a different age, so I am back to square one, any more ideas anyone?
thanks

Hello, please could someone look up my ancestor for me on the 1881 and 1891 census.
the info I have is
Walter Eady (from Marriage cert)
age 21 years in 1896 when he married
Sarah ann Newman age 21 also
Walter's father is down as being Decd
His name is James Eady, their address at the time is Hall Street Long Melford, Suffolk. James Eady is down as being a Mat Maker and Walter Eady is down as being a Stockman, any info on either Walter or James and their family would be great. I have all I need for his Wife Sarah ann Newman, it is the Eady side I am struggling with.
Thanks for any info
Di
