thanks gordon for all that info, much appreciated. marjories mum was isabel may house b1886 about and now my task is to find out who at least her mum or dad was. isabel left her daughter with grandparents as she married in 1909 and had her before she married. wasnt the done thing then i guess!
thanks again the quest continues.

Just a note: the "M"s and "F"s in the 1911 census are for male and female - not middle initials. In the actual census results at the 1911 site this is clear because things are in columns, but in the copied text here it all runs together.

When I copy 1911 info here I always delete them, precisely because they cause this confusion!

Christina,

Don't know if this is of any use but the 1911 census for the Margery I think you've been discussing has the following info:

Head of household is Alfred House aged 78. Retired pensioner and born in Latchmore Brokenhurst? Please forgive if that location doesn't make any sense, I'm only relaying what I can read.

Jane House is Alfred's wife and aged 82. Her birthplace is given as Somerset. The record is more specific about where in Somerset, but I cannot make it out. Alfred House filled in the census form and has his own style of handwriting and spelling.

I think the above may explain why electronic transcriptions of this census record have so many 'M's as middle initials. Alfred's 'H' is an M' with a big horizontal slash to make it a 'H'.

Other members include Edwin William House (son, born in Southampton) aged 52 and single. Edwin is recorded by his dad as being a domestic Gardener.

Also is Frank House (son, born Lyndhurst), aged 48 and single and recorded as (I think) 'awaiting army pension', and 'general labourer'.

Finally Margery, aged 6 (Granddaughter, born in Latchmore, Brokenhurst).

In filling out Frank's occupation details, Alfred appears to have strayed over the lines and onto Margery's details. He took time to correct this with a big thick line separating Frank's details from Margery's.

Alfred signed the census form and gave the address as Hope Cottage, Latchmore, Brokenhurst. The 'cottage' had 4 dwelling rooms and 4 bedrooms.

Maybe of interest.

Kind regards, Gordon.

this hobby of mine is taking over every spare minute.but finding out all this family history is so interesting, so i cant stop now.
just in from work, better go off and do my own housework or will be here all afternoon.

No, Christina..................

Margery was illegitmate - I certainly hope her mother's brother didn't father her!!

That would be a problem!!

Christina

Please look at the marriage info I posted for you - which, incidentally, you could have found yourself on freebmd.

The mother's husband obviously didn't want her illegitimate daughter living with them......

I also posted 1901 census - or did you miss that?

All the info is on here..................

gt aunt alice mary was 23 in 1901 so dont think so birdsinanest.i wonder who marjorie potter is, not mine i dont think. grandmother was born 21 dec 1904 and would have been 6/7 on the 1911 census.
i am a bit confused now. was the edwin and frank males her uncles? and if so where was her mother who i think was born around 1886 as i heard in the family she was about 18 when marjorie was born.
i knew this tree wouldnt be straightforward and so far its proving right but will plod on. thanks to all who have helped so far.
maybe the birth cert will sort it out afterall. thnks christina
