Marriage ages in the 1840s

Tansy Report 2 Feb 2010 18:06

Hi, I'm not quite sure where this post is supposed to go! I've been researching my ancestors of the surname SEARLEY, from Dorset.

I've managed to find my Great(x4) Grandfather, George Searley but have become a bit confused with dates.

He married Susanna Ricketts in 1849 and was born around 1828.

When I then tried to find his parents, I found Samuel Searley and Eizabeth Bevis who I'm pretty sure are his parents, but their son George was born in 1838.

If this is him, then he would have gotten married in 1849 at the age of 11!
I double checked marriage ages, and as far as I'm aware, boys had to be 14 and girls had to be 12 to get married.

As well as this, Samuel and Elizabeth were married in November 1838, and their son George was born less than a month later, I don't know if this bears any relevance but it would seem that they were rushed into marriage because she was pregnant.

SO I'm very confused and not quite sure where else to look, as I'd really like to trace the family back further.

It would be very useful if I were able to trace any of George's siblings to help me find out if Samuel and Elizabeth are his parents.

If anyone has any information on the Searleys, or on marriage ages in the 19th century, It would be very much appreciated,

Thank you,

Tansy

I live in Western Australia but am trying to find any information on my great great grandparents George & Susan Searley (nee Ricketts). When their son James, my great grandfather, was born in February 1884 they were living in Coombe Keynes. I have checked and this is not far from Poole in Dorset so I am hoping someone may be able to help me. [ Joan Strahan ]

Your George & Susanna:
1851 census
East Lalworth,
George Searley, head, 24, ag lab, born East Lalworth

Henry, son, 9 months, born E. Lalworth
Sarah Ricketts, visitor, 18, dressmaker, born "
Henry Ricketts, visitor, 8, born Coombe

Evidently sarah 18 is Susan/Susanna's sister and Sarah 53, her mother. Don't know about Henry.

Thanks again for the info :)

I've managed to find quite a lot about the Ricketts side..... Susanna was born in 1830

Her parents= Henry Ricketts (c1796) an Agricultural Labourer and Sarah Tuck (c1801)

Their children=

Martha Ricketts (1819)>>>> Married to Charles Runyard
Maria Ricketts (c1826)>>>> Spinster with a son, Henry
Edmund Ricketts (c1828)>>>> Married to Matilda Thompson+ 4 children
Susanna Ricketts (1830)>>>>Maried to George Searley + 5 children
Sarah Ricketts (c1833)
James Ricketts(c1836)

I have not found Sarah Tuck's Parents but Henry's father was also called Henry Ricketts- he was born around 1765 and died in 1847.

This Henry was married to Charity Galton (c1764-1822) and had 8 other children. However I am not sure whether Charity was Henry (jr)'s Mother or not.

Joy,

..Maria? That's interesting...

Although... Aha! I see, the Henry Ricketts I have was born in 1851, not 1843.. but then who is this Henry? :S

Ooh I found this in the 1851 Census:

Highwood; Dinah SEARLEY; Visitor; Wid; female 56; Landed proprietress; Dorset, E. Stoke

27; Highwood; Robert SEARLEY; Head; Mar; 52; Woodman; Dorset, E. Stoke

; Highwood; Mary SEARLEY; Wife; Mar; female 49; --; Dorset, E. Stoke

; Highwood; Jane SEARLEY; Dau; U; female 15; --; Dorset, E. Stoke

; Highwood; William SEARLEY; Son; U; male 12; Work on Farm; Dorset, E. Stoke

; Highwood; Henry SEARLEY; Son; male 10; Scholar; Dorset, E. Stoke

; Highwood; Fanny SEARLEY; Granddaughter; female 8m; --; Dorset, E. Stoke

The dates also fit in quite nicely, it would suggest he was married to Mary.. But whether this was his only marriage, I'm not sure. George isn't on it but he would have been around 23, so had probably left home- he would have been married to SUsanna for a couple of years...

Ah, 1825. That's great, thank you again!

I found more census info:

Robert; SEARLEY; Head; Married; 62; Lab; Highwood ; Blind; F5p3

; ; Mary; SEARLEY; Wife; Married; 60; ; Combe ; F5p3

; ; Henry; SEARLEY; Son; Unmarried; 20; Lab; Highwood ; F5p4

; ; Fanny; SEARLEY; G-Daughter; Unmarried; 10; Scholar; Highwood ; F5p4

; ; Margret; SEARLEY; Grandmother; Widow; 85; Widow; Highwood ; F5p4

Margaret must be Robert's mother. And it seems he's been listed as blind now.

Reece Report 2 Feb 2010 19:54

The HARDWICK MARRIAGE ACT 1754 allowed the minimum age for marriage for males at 14 years and 12 years for females.

This Act remained until 1929 when the age for both males and females was changed to 16 years.

I think East Lalworth should be East Lulworth, Dorset.

Good searching.
