Redrobin Report 3 Feb 2010 21:23

Hi,
I have read a thread on ancestry, which I can't find at the moment, which says that Elizabeth Alice CHAPMAN is a 2nd cousin of Joseph Rudyard KIPLING the author.
Elizabeth b 1879 Hull married Thomas Wharram and they emigrated to Salt Lake.
I have got Elizabeth in my tree, with parents, siblings etc.
What I am trying to find is how she is connected to Rudyard Kipling b 30th dec 1865 India.

Thankyou for any help you can give.

SylviaG Have to go to bed now, 22.05 early start in the
morning. Will check in tomorrow to see if I have had any replies. Good night.

On the Ancestry tree Rambling Rose has linked to there is the following person:
Joseph Kipling
Birth 17 Mar 1805 in Lythe, Yorkshire, , England
Death19 Jan 1862 in Skipton, Yorkshire, , England

He is the son of John Kipling and Ann Hansell.

On another tree on Ancestry: Merrys of Lockton
Owner: en2gen
the same person is listed.
This tree gives Joseph Kipling Marrying Frances Lockwood in c.1836.

One of their children was John Lockwood Kipling 1837-1911. He was Joseph Rudyard Kiplings father.

I can't quite figure out how Joseph Kipling (1805-1862) is related to Elizabeth Alice Chapman though!

Morning,
According to Rudtard Kiplings Biography,

Hi mother was Alice Kipling ( nee MacDonald)
Father (John) Lockwood Kipling.

Rudyard married Caroline Balestair 1892 London. aged 29

He had 3 children. 2 girls, Josephine 1892
Elsie 1896
and 1 son John 1897 who died 1915 battle of Loos ( Irish Guards )
Only Elsie survived past the age of 18 and she died childless.

Rudyard had a maternal aunt, Georgiana who Married Edward Burne-Jones (painter) in Fulham and an Aunt Agnes Who married Edward Poynter.

A 1st cousin of Rudyard was Conservative Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin.

Rudyard had a sister named Alice ( known as Trix )

Thats about all the info I have. I know its short on dates but this is all the details the biography gave me.

I think I need to find out if his father or grandfather had siblings and maybe search from there.
I have left messages for the two people who have him in their tree on GR.

Lets hope we can solve this one.

Will be out most of the day but will be back on later.

Thanking you all in advance.

To be a second cousin, I believe they would have to have a 'common' Great grandparent.

Do you know who Elizabeth's great grandparents were?

Hi,
The ancestors of Elizabeth Chapman are as follows.

PARENTS William Chapman 1844-1906 b Hunslett Leeds
Caroline Jackson 1871 Hull

GRANDPARENTS James Chapman 1817-c1883 Norfolk
Lydia Gillam c1820-1884 Bradford

GT GRANDPARENTS Edward Chapman c1790-1850 Norfolk
Lydia Blazier c 1793-1871 b Norfolk

Hope this helps, but thats as far back as I can go .

Thanks for all help so far.

Elizabeth would have had 4 lots of Great Grandparents - do you have the others?

Joseph Rudyard Kipling would have had the same number.

We would have to find all of them and try to match them up.

UP DATE

I think I have cracked it.

John Kipling 1774-1835 Son Joseph Kipling 1805-1862 and amongst other children he had daughter Bessy Kipling 1819-

Joseph Kipling 1805-1862 had son John Lockwood Kipling b 1837

John Lockwood Kipling had son Joseph RUDYARD Kipling.

Bessy Kipling married John Jackson.
They had Elizabeth Jackson who imarried William CHAPMAN who are the parents of Elizabeth Alice Chapman my ancestor..

Hope that all makes sense.
Got a headache now, but feeling elated.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Take care though Sylvia,

Please make sure that I HAVE pointed you in the right direction before you add them to your tree!

Will not be on much over the next couple of days for reasons I have sent you in pm.

Keep your thread updated and I will come back to it.

Hi Dea,

The clue was in the 4 sets of great grandparents.

I jad only looked at the male side when the answer was on the female side.

Hope that makes sense.

Have not added to my tree yet as I want to confirm I have it right first.

This hobby is better than CLUEDO.
