Had a look for Anne's birth but all I could come up with was this one
1 29/12/1822 STEVENSON ANN WILLIAM STEVENSON/JANE YOUNG FR1363 F AIRDRIE OR NEW MONKLAND /LANARK 651/ 0060 0038
mothers maiden surname agrees but first name does not but I would keep a note as perhaps the son just did not know his grans first name and she went by Mary
Johns death was regestered in District of Plantation County of Lanark
John Ewen coal miner married to Ann Stevenson died 6 Sep 1885 age 53
28 Plantation Street Govan parents William Ewan ploughman dec and Christina Ewen m/s McLaren dec death was registered by C Larkison? residence at 4 Newstead {lace Govan Road(Present)

Have you got a DOB for Mary Ewan? If not I think it may say on her death certificate...... hopefully if you could find this out it should confirm if the birth reg I found on SP is actually her.

Hi,
If you mean the surname Ewan/Ewen or Ewing and the different spelling of it, like already stated this was possibly down to the fact that everyone would hear and spell differently, and unfortunately you may never know the REAL surname and don't forget surnames did have the ability to change slightly over the years. As for John Ewan, well his place of birth helps and in 1851 he is living with a brother..... so with 2 of the boys names it would narrow the search down for his parentage.
Ann/Annie Stevensons though maybe a different kettle of fish... I couldn't see her in 1851 (only had a quick look though), so it maybe difficult to trace her back.
The years of birth for Mary's parents (James and Annie) C. 1848..... can I take it this was a guess, thinking if she was the first born then they would be approx 21 years of age at marriage?? And I presume James is named on Marys marriage certificate? What was his occupation??? I couldn't see John and Ann in 1881... so maybe John had died and Ann remarried??? If this is the case maybe Mary wasn't sure of her fathers name and maybe even used a stepfathers name??

This is the birth on SP for the Mary that I found;
No Year Surname Forename Sex District City/County/MR GROS Data Image Extract 1 1868 EWEN MARY F DALZIEL /LANARK 639/00 0173
And if James was actually John we wouldn't be able to get a marriage certificate because SP starts in 1855 and their marriage was in 1854.

Here is the marriage for John and Ann.
As for Ewing/ Ewing, remember a lot of these people were illiterate, transcribers wrote names as they heard them so accents played a big part and yes, names did vary through the years but they are essentially the same.
Further north, Gaelic was still being anglicized so there is a lot more scope for mistakes.
You have a few children with middle names. These are usually surnames in the family, eg grandparents, g grandparents etc.
JOHN EWING Pedigree Male Family Event(s): Birth: Christening: Death: Burial: Marriages: Spouse: ANN STEVENSON Family Marriage: 27 JAN 1854 Riccarton, Ayr, Scotland

Thank you to all,Iam still confused,names?But Ewan not Ewing is what I have,I dont think I have seen a family that chaged their surname as much as this lot.Or maybe they could not read or write! Iam sure Stevenson is the correct name for Ann,as Mary named one of her daughters Annie Stevenson Day. You all have done alot of work and Iam thankful.Deb

Hi,
Could there have been a mix up with the fathers name?
MARY EWEN Pedigree Female
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Event(s): Birth: 04 MAY 1868 Dalziel, Lanark, Scotland Christening: Death: Burial:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Parents: Father: JOHN EWEN Family Mother: ANN STEVENSON
They had a son in 1856, and this marriage would be in the corect area for that birth;
JOHN EWING Pedigree Male Family
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Event(s): Birth: Christening: Death: Burial:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Marriages: Spouse: ANN STEVENSON Family Marriage: 27 JAN 1854 Riccarton, Ayr, Scotland However I don't think this couple could have been born C. 1848, so is this date just guess work?
