Dear All, thank you for your help in the past, I have found out why I couldn't find my grandfather, he changed his name from Edwin Turner to Edwin Elkin some time after 1911 and before his marriage in 1921 (so during war perhaps) - I have found an Edwin Turner that fits the bill. Thanks again. |

Hello Madmeg, and thanks very much again to you and everyone else. No, I think on reflection the Laura Jeanette Grant must be a coincidence that she shares the same forenames as my grandmother or perhaps it was recorded wrongly. I think I will pursue the Edwin Elkins buried in 1893 in Portsea and the wife who could have been known as Jessie (Sarah Jane) and try and find a grave and who bought it so thanks for that suggestion. However I am still puzzled by the Edwin Elkin patternmaker born c.1823 married to Elizabeth on the 1871 census. Perhaps he fathered my grandfather in 1879 out of wedlock. Perhaps they just decided to break the law and not record the birth. I need to find out when Edwin Elkin patternmaker died I think. I've got plenty to work on now, thanks to you all. |

Thanks very much everyone, I am a novice on this site and have only just found all your research. I will follow up on what you have found. I can confirm that Edwin was 42 on the marriage cert, my grandmother Laura Jeanette Pollentine gave her age as 24 in fact she was 29. The witnesses were her mother Raimonda Pollentine and a suspiciously named Laura Jeannette Grant. I believe there was some trouble in the family with bad feeling between my grandfather and his father Edwin the Patternmaker. My grandfather would never talk about it apparently. So it is a mystery I am keen to solve! Many thanks all. Sorry for the odd replies, I am still getting the hang of the site. |

Perhaps, as in many instances, Edwin jnr used his grandfather's details when marrying, because his mother was unmarried. Just speculating about possible scenarios |

I'm going pot-eyed after only one page. Someone found a pattern maker? Ah, SnowyJen found Edwin b 1823., wife born 1818, too old, could be grandparents of young Edwin. |

Now I'm just looking at these dates we have. Edwin Elkin who died 1949 was born 1879. He married Laura Pollentine in 1921. That means he was 42. Pretty old for a first marriage. Very old some might say. But it seems that Fay has that marriage cert, so can you just confirm Fay that he was 42? Was he a widower? Possibly not, these musical director chaps can be quite eccentric and not conform to the norm. Otherwise they'd be cotton weavers, like all my ancestors. How old was Laura at marriage? |

Kath, the one you found in 1881 has a father John, not Edwin. |
