Find Ancestors

I am looking for John (could be called Thomas) Varey born c.1835, married to Emma Fry who was born in Warwickshire in 1840. They lived in Salford, Manchester area after they married and had a son John and a daughter Clara. Clara married John Albert Cowie c.1900. Does anyone know of the decendants of Clara and John Albert Cowie ? I'm hoping that someone may throw some light on the correct name for Clara's father as I can't find any record of his birth or death.

I can't find John on 1861 - IF he is the Thomas Varey who married Emma, they did not marry until September of that year?

I really can't find out where the Varey comes in !

did Emma marry Thomas Varey, things not work out and she met John Shone and set up home with him???

If Emma married in 1861 it would seem strange that the first child was born in 1874, is this also why Clara is regsitered as Varey and given the middle name of her true father "Shone"?

What do you think of Emma setting up home with John Shone although she was married to Thomas Varey?


Johns birth and death are registered using his middle name......... so IF he had have married he surely would have used his middle name??

I'm pleased to hear your feeling alittle better, just done a little housework........ oh, need a break from it now!!!

I found a Thomas Varey born 1835 in the Manchester area, he was a paper hanger.... so I wonder if Emma married him? I can't pinpoint him after then though.


I changed my name 'cos I was helping a Denise out and it looked like I was answering myself........ thought rumours might start on the boards that I'd gone completely cuckoo, so decided to change it, but still sign in my usual way.

after the marriage , it all seemed wrong. So you clever ladies have done it again !

Thanks to all for solving something that has had me baffled for months.
Emma & Thomas did marry in Aug 1861. I was also dubious that it was 12 years before they had their first child,John. I found the reference to Clara Shone Varey, but didn't think that she was one and the same as on the 1891 census. I had the 1891 census showing Emma as a widow, therefore I knew that John had died, but when! The reference to John Shone at Sunnyside Street convinces me that this is the correct one. No-one of an older generation is still living to ask questions. I'm fairly new to all this, and so far have had success in my research, except for this particular one. Thanks to you clever ladies, I will be able to put my cousins in the picture now, and complete another part of my family tree.
