Yes I am new to this and it takes me forever to find anything so I am very gratful for all the help I get.

The age in 1841, assuming the enumerator obeyed the rules, was round down to the nearest 5 years. So James born 1792 would actually be 49 in 1841, rounded down to 45. But there was no rounding in 1851, so his true aged of 59 would be given.

Bear in mind though, that back then people forgot how old they were, or the person giving the information wasn't sure, so they might get it wrong.

In 1841 census it says tha James was born 1796 which is 5 years difference to his year of birth in 1851. I dont know how it works but in the 1841 census I think it is rounded up or down for the year of birth. Someone on this site could probably explain it more clearly than I am able but the 1841 yob is not to be relied upon but to be treated more as "born about" that time.

Its interesting that between the Census for 1841 and 1851 James gained 14years of age and Elizabeth gained 15 years???? How does that work
