Hi Elizabeth.

Sorry...but i'm not familiar with U.K ..BDM's and whether you can download certs.... Not that i am aware of.

For here in Australia, i only know you can with the state of Victoria ( Historical records only ....for the years that fall before the Australian 100 year privacy act ), but might be worth checking the links to other States.

Marriage certs can be ordered on-line ( Credit card ) and downloaded to your computer for the State of Victoria....at.

https://online.justice.vic.gov.au/bdm/home

If Emma WHITE was "of age" ( Adult ) when she married, it was not compulsary to give parents names on marriage cert.....but she "may" have.....Its a hit and miss situation.

Best of Luck.

Thanks again, Tony. Where do I go to view or purchase a marriage certificate for them. Can I view it on the web?
It's getting late - time for bed. I'll check any further answers in the morning.
I appreciate everyone's help so far.
Regards,
Elizabeth

Hi Elizabeth.

Yes...wouldnt surprise me at all ( Index entry error )

I had noticed a childs birth ( Irene Mary ) in 1888 in Victoria, with father George Robbins GLIDDON and mother Ida TYLEY....so figured one of the unnamed could be a male.

Only listed these as to give you a marriage date (1858 ) for Emma WHITE.....Ref Number: 408
As to purchase her marriage cert should give her parents names.

WHITE ---- MR - NOV 1852 GREAT BRITAIN B 016 003
WHITE ---- MRS - NOV 1852 GREAT BRITAIN B 016 003

Cheers

Thanks, Sal. I appreciate all your help. Hopefully the answers are coming!

Elizabeth Report 2 Apr 2010 13:20

Thanks, Tony. Interestingly there must be a mistake as the unnamed female born 1861 was in fact a male, George Robbins jnr born 22nd feb 1861, Bendigo.
I was unaware of Josephine- she must have died young, as did Frederick Thomas and Kate Francis.

I am sure there are endless possibilities Emmas mother could have married after she had Emma and everyone presumed he was Emmas father or her mother could have married someone with the same surname in which case she would have been Emma White mothers maiden name White.

I am still trying to see if I can work out which is the right Emma White.

I see what you mean, but if that's the case the descendants were unaware of this. I have a copy of a letter written by Emma and George's son, also George, talking about his parents. He says he had been told Emma's parents came out to Australia with her but died shortly after arrival, and therefore nothing was known of them .

Captain Matthews wife could have had maiden name White as could Emmas mother meaning Emmas mother was not married when she had Emma therefore Emma illegitimate.

This is why it needs further checking.

I don't quite follow how that could be the case. Emma's aunt who married Captain Matthews wouldn't have had the surname White before she was married, she would have had the same maiden name as Emma's mother. What were the christian names of the Captain Matthews you have found?

Staffslass Report 2 Apr 2010 12:15

I have googled Captain Matthews he apparently married Mary Ann Jemima White on 10 July 1826 in Stepney London. If this is the correct man and marriage Emma may have been illegitimate.

Will see if I can find any more.

Elizabeth,
If you can hold of Emma's marriage certificate, that would give you her fathers name and occupation.

Emma White, born England 1832, emigrated to Aust with her parents (names unknown). Arrived Melbourne on steamer "Great Britain" in 1852 captained by her mother's sister's husband Captain BR Matthews(who later became harbourmaster at Williamstown). Emma married George Robbins Gliddon , born in London in 1825, in about 1860 in Victoria. He died in 1877. Children included Clara Louise, George Robbins, Mary Ann Emma, Gertrude Thyrza and Beatrice Bertha. They lived in South Australia. Emma died 23rd May 1900. Would love to know about her parents, siblings etc. and where she was born.
