Margaret. Thanks for the nudge. I am OK with this thread at the moment. I have found the family who took my grandma in and they have given me info to look into. I have also emailed a church in the US thanks to the brilliant info from you re the grave. Many thanks to all who helped.

Gosh...just logged on and am amazed. You will have to give me some time to look through all of this later today. Many thanks to all of you.
I amended the 1901 census from Tarrell to Farrell when Jonesey kindly found me the entry a couple of days ago.

http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/ is transcribing the local index for Blackburn RD. Currently, they're retrofitting the mum's MS to births - they're up to abt 1880 (it varies by subdistrict). So maybe in a years time, you can find your Ann's older bros.

Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1898
Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Church / Register Office Registers At Reference
MILLER Ann FARRELL William James Blackburn Register Office or Registrar Attended Blackburn RM/135/131

Before 1898, only CofE, jews and quakers could keep marr registers, so the registrar would attend all non-conformist marrs. They changed the rules sometime in 1898, and let most non-conformists keep registers (except for RCs until abt 1980).

I'm looking for them, too, on the 1901 census. Decided to use Far* for last name. This one made me chuckle:

Name: William Fart
Spouse: Ann
Birth: abt 1853 - Warrington, Lancashire, England
Residence: 1901 - Warrington, Warrington, Lancashire, England

Jonesey Report 27 Apr 2010 20:25

Enumeration of the 1920 US census began on 1st January 1920 and even if the actual date of enumeration was later, the information about a person was recorded to reflect their status on the 1st of January that year. In that circumstance anyone born on 29th of March 1912 should have been recorded as 7 years old in that census.

Enumeration of the 1930 US census began on 2nd April 1930 and even if the actual date of enumeration was later, the information that was recorded about a person was to reflect their status on the 1st of April that year. In that circumstance anyone born on 29th of March 1912 should have been recorded as 18 years old in that census.

As the 1930 census details for the presbytery would have been supplied to the enumerator by someone other than a family member it is quite possible that the information supplied was not 100% accurate. William would have been 18yrs and 3 days old on 1st of April.

Oh of course, Rose! I was having another "senior moment" thinking that it was the 1910 census where he was 7 9/12.

1912 is fine because he's 7 9/12 on the 1920 census and it was enumerated on Jan 19th 1920.

Jonesey
Oh dear Im beginning to doubt myself now. The concrete info I have is as follows;
William J Farrell and Ann Miller marry 1898 in UK
They were together in 1901 in Blackburn
My grandmother Ann was born Jan1908 in UK
William J Farrell dies 14/1/1935 in USA possibly Chicago
His son William F Farrell is ordained as Father Philip Francis 23/4/1940 and performs first mass at St Michaels Church, Providence, RI 28/4/1740. I have the mass card for this so I know the initial is correct.

Family say there were 2 brothers born prior to Ann (One possibly called Walter) in the UK. They know William J went to the US and my grandmother was put in an orphanage for a short period of time then brought up by a family friend. No one knows what became of her mother except that she died around 1950 or the two boys. It is known that my grandmother Ann and her half brother William (known as Father Billy in the family) wrote to each other a couple of times a year up to when she died in Dec 1982.
I t may be that someone can look at the passenger lists for 1910 for me and see if that throws up any other info.
Thanks for looking and spending time on it for me

Christine,

No luck with the marriage in the US I'm afraid. Unfortunately Rhode Island seems to be the only New England state on Ancestry for marriages at about that time.

Can I sow a seed of possible doubt? You mentioned that William Farrell Jnr went on to become a priest in Providence R.I. Do you have definate proof of that and that he was William J Farrell's son?

The reason that I ask is because looking for him in the 1930 US census I came accross the chap below. His birthplace is indicated as Rhode Island and his birthyear c1913. He is in a presbytery so presumably studying for the preisthood. The snag is that his middle initial is recorded as J not F and according to the census his father was born in the Irish Free State and his mother in Massachusetts. It might just be a coinsidence but he is the only William Farrell I can spot with a birthplace in Rhode Island and a birthyear 1913~1915.

Name: William J Farrell
Home in 1930: St Josephs Normal Institute, Mount Pleasant, Westchester, New York
View Map
Age: 17
Estimated birth year: abt 1913
Birthplace: Rhode Island
Race: White

Yes, I realized after that that marriage couldn't be correct, Ellen was too young to marry in 1898.

Christine

Christine Report 27 Apr 2010 16:18

No it was def USA The marriage you have found is the right William Farrell but that is his marriage to my grandmother Ann Miller

Jonesey

Jonesey Report 27 Apr 2010 16:18

Unfortunately there is no national register of births or marriages in the US. Each state maintains its own records.

I have just had a quick look at Rhode Island but nothing showing. I have to go out for a short while but If nothing has been found for you when I return I will check a few neighbouring states to see if anything can be found there.
