Thank you for all the information but I'm feeling a bit embarrassed now as I was aware of the Gunning family and you put in all that work for me. This was one of my first port of calls to see if there were any private papers of Sir George Gunning which may have threw some light on Lewis Knightley, alas I could find nothing. I now feel more sure that this would be his name and the Le'Strange part could have come from his wife or maybe his mother's side of the family. It will be great if after one posting on here that I could link up to the Knightley line that you have given me(back to the 11th century) which is most appreciated. I have made one small observation that the Charles Knightley christened in 1781 at Preston Capes, about 1 mile East of the village is a small wood called Knightley Wood . Once again many thanks for your efforts. It now looks like a lot of midnight oil is going to get burnt.

Thank you very much Clitheroelass, that is definitely him. Now I know where he was born it gives me a chance to find his parents. We did not know if he was born in France and not sure about the nationality of his parents but hope we can move on from here.

Charles L'Strange (Le'Strange) Knightley, son of Louis (Lewis) Le'strange Knightly who was private secretary to Sir George Gunning (Diplomat) in Calais France late 1800's. Louis married the Lady in Waiting (name not known) to Lady Gunning and had Charles in 1878. When Charles was a few months old The family moved to Northamptonshire, The Gunnings had a house there so maybe they lived with Sir George and Lady Gunning. When Charles was 16 his parents died (don't know if natural or of something else) Charles then went to work for Sir Basil Levitt at Burton on Trent as a gardener. Charles then went into the shoe business and moved to Lancashire where he met and married my Gt/Gt Aunt Alice Workman in 1913, they then left and went to live Canada. I have search every where i can for any history of Charles and his parents and have come up with nothing, so hoping someone maybe able to throw some light on my search.
