Elizabeth and I have realized that Lesley has not read the PM from Elizabeth and so is not aware of the further discussion in this thread. We're deleting our posts, since they contain rather personal info about the Duffy family, and we have kept copies of the thread.

Lesley, I hope you return and see these posts in future. If you do, just add a message here and Elizabeth will be in touch.

Well, you notice that thread started in 2007 and was last updated quite recently -- and by 2007 I'd already done the main load of the work, starting in about 2003, I think!

It all began because I was kind of idly looking at what was out there for genealogy stuff when the internet was maturing and coming into its own as a research tool for nearly everything ... and ran into Genforum where I ran into Peter who became my Monck mentor (and thought I was completely barking mad as I used him as my sounding board, until he found the baptisms of my "Moncks" as Hills just as I'd theorized for months) ... and he introduced me to FreeBMD ... and for starters I thought I'd just take a shot at Ernest of the tall tales ... and there was noooo record of his existence before his marriage in 1883 at the age of 32. And I was very shortly very completely and incurably hooked. ;)

Absolutely done on line. There is no other way it could *possibly* have been done. It depended on devious use of search engines, first to discover a set of parallel coincidences, and then to see how Person A matched up with Person B, and Person X (Person A's sister) matched up with Person Y (Person B's sister), and so on.

Mine's was a totally fake surname ... unless his father really was the black sheep younger son of the Viscount as he told the tale ...

You can read all about it, although the tale is told rather backwards here!

Hi JaneyCanuck,

I hope your discovery was through the internet and not down the long hard road of pre net searches!. future searches, in the UK, will have similar battles with some not putting fathers name on birth certs/using maternal surname...... don't envy them their tasks!.

The related thread --

And dang, they do sound similar, don't they?

My mum married and changed her surname that way 50 years before I discovered the one *she* was born with was fake!

Hi brummiejan and Cynthia,

Had you not told me, I would not have known there were replies, Thank you for letting me know and for the advice you give here.

So far, I think and hope I have managed to;
Sent a message to Lesley.
Started a thread, Re; Edward Duffy
And I know I have managed to reply to this one, and another Lesley had, re; Edward.

If her Edward is the same as mine, she may not thank me for the info I have, it will change much of hers. :(
Thanks again, you have been very helpful.

Hi Eliabeth, you can also try putting the names you are researching into the Search Trees box above to see if anyone else on this site has them in their tree. If you find a connection, you can contact the tree owner. Cx

brummiejan Report 4 May 2010 08:39

Can I ask when your mother was born? Still not seeing a marriage for them and it would give a rough idea of year. If they married of course! Can't see any Duffy/Riley births either.
There is a marriage of an Edward Duffy in Rochdale1921, but to a Margaret Tommins.

If you think she died Rochdale, there are only a couple which roughly fit your dates:

Florence Margaret Duffy 1906 Feb 1989 Rochdale Lancashire

Margaret Duffy 1907 1981 Rochdale Greater Mancheste
