I have the unfortunate name of Mary Brown !
She married Joseph Vine in 1913 in West Ham.
The cert says father Michael Brown a labourer.
There are possibilities in the 1891/1901 census.
Too many births in the London area for Mary.
How on earth do I proceed with this?

I really need some help.

Regards

Maggie

Thanks Ann, I saw this and wondered, I just don't have the proof it is her, although after such a common name there are very few with father Michael Brown

Thanks for your help

I think the 1911 census must be the correct family. If you look for Mary Browns born c1889 with father Michael there are very few, and that one matches on all points.

Maggie, if you use the advanced search on the 1911 searching for:

Mary Brown 1889 2years+/- with father named Michael there are only 2 results.....so it is a good bet it is the family.

Thanks Ann, this is the problem I have been having, because I don't know London areas. I saw several births for a Mary Brown, but which one?? Now I see that Canning town comes under West Ham, so this birth is a strong possibility thank you..

Thanks Ann

On the 1891 census Mary Brown (mother) aged 24, was born in East Indies. On the 1901 it says birth place London Poplar.
Does anyone know if there is/was an 'East Indies' in London, maybe an area ?
Thanks
Maggie

Hi maggie,

Only just logged on so sorry for not replying! That is a strange one indeed East Indies?

I think I can see her also in the 1871, but not sure and there it states born poplar..parents born Ireland.

I understand your doubt, when also the brother is born East Indies. have you unraveled it yet?

Hi Ann, no it is not unravelled yet.lol

The marriage Rose gave cannot be theirs as Mary would only have been 5 ! and I can't find another one for a Michael Brown and Mary McCarthy in the right time scale. Always assuming she was called McCarthy because of the brother in law Patrick McCarthy link in 1891
The one you found in 1871, was it mother Bridget? It says father Florence !!

The search continues !
