you can search the 1911 free, just not see details

http://www.1911census.co.uk/search/tnaform.aspx

I don't see a Martha Burton ( or smith*ale ) born 1855-1861 living in Middlesbrough

chrissiex Report 17 Oct 2011 23:56

that death was registered in apr-may-jun quarter ... it is just possible that she died at the end of March before the census date

I don't have access to 1911 but I'm sure someone will comply.

Yeah a bit odd - the name and age is correct. Do you have access to the 1911? It would be nice to see her there.

Thought it might just have been spelled wrong but I tried Burton/Berton/Barton. No luck.

Peter

Peter Report 17 Oct 2011 19:03

Yes, I thought the same thing - can you offer a suggestion as to why this may be?

MargaretM

MargaretM Report 17 Oct 2011 18:27

Curiously that death doesn't show up on Tees Valley Indexes.

Hi there, it has taken a while to get back to this one, but I still having difficulty finding Martha in 1911.

I cannot find any suitable marriages or deaths on Free BMD, and I can't see a death for Martha before 1911. I suspect this may be her death:

Deaths Jun 1911 (>99%)
Burton Martha A 53 Middlesbro 9d 328 Scan available - click to view

Can someone spot her please?

I will then look for her unmarried daughters.

Thanks,

Peter

look on www.freebmd.org.uk to find marriages for the girls

it's more than likely that they will have married by 1911

Dear all,

I am looking for my relation Martha Burton. She was born in c. 1857 in Wastonlear, Suffolk, and was in a common-law marriage with Henry Smitheringale (1844-1907).

Martha and Henry had the following children (all named Smitheringale):

Rose Hannah (1878-1879)
John Henry (1878-????)
Susan (1881-1883)
Mary Jane (1882-????)
Betsey Amelia (1885-????)
Fanny (1887-????)
Florence (1889-????)

Henry and Martha's relationship broke down in 1892, and she seems to have reverted back to her name of Burton after this ... the surname Smitheringale is unusal and I assume her children took their mother's name after this, as I can't find any of the daughter's I mention above under the name Smitheringale.

It is possible that John Henry died of WW1 wounds in 1918.

So, with this, can anyone spot Martha and her children in the 1911 census?

Thank you
