Passenger list to USA please - Moran & Swales 1882

Since discovering that Priscilla Swales (b1861 Preston) married Martin Moran in America in 1882, I have been intrigued to know how they get there.
I have Martin in prison in Lancashire on 1881 census and the couple appear to be back in Preston for the birth of daughter Elizabeth in 1883.
Were they deported as convicts?
Did they stow away and then get shipped back home again?
These were poor people (hawkers) and it seems strange that they should simply travel to America to get married and then travel home again.
Please can someone with access to passenger lists do a look-up for me for 1881-82 UK to USA and then 82 -83 for return journey to see if it mentions deportation .

Would be much obliged.

Record :
Martin MORAN - (parents : Henry & Ann) 1860 England
Priscilla A. SWALES (parents : John & Elizabeth) 1861 England

Married 2 Nov 1882
.
St. Joseph's Church, Ashton, Cumberland, Rhode Island.

Yes Ginny, she got 3 months I seem to remember. She was born 1861 [like it says in my opening post !!]
Martin Moran got 12 months - both for theft.

I cant see any record of them going overseas. If they stowed away and were caught, they would be mentioned on the ships trancscript

What makes you say they went to the States?

choccy found the marriage for me... see OP for record (Rhode Island).

Surely too much of a coincidence Priscilla having the same birthdate and parents John and Elizabeth

I must be going blind...was it at the top of this thread, the deleted post?

The record that you posted looks like its from IGI (cant get on there at the moment) was it a submitted record?

Nothing on Ancestry that I can see at the moment

The original post was a request to find the marriage.
Once Choccy found it I printed off all the info and then deleted the thread by accident.

This is choccy's post :

Some Irish Marriages at St. Joseph's Church, Ashton [Cumberland] RI, 1872 to 1900
(from the compilation by the American-French Genealogical Society, 1988)

St. Joseph's Church was started in 1872, having split off from St. Patrick's Church in Valley Falls. The congregation was mostly Irish and French-Canadian. The church is still open and is located on Rt. 122 in Cumberland. Only those individuals who could be identified to be of Irish heritage were abstracted from the published records, and this listing contains marriages up to 1900.

Martin MORAN Henry & Ann 1860 England
Priscilla A. SWALES John & Elizabeth 1861 England

2 Nov 1882

-----------------------------------

I originally thought it was Cumberland UK until Choccy pointed out the R.I. was Rhode Island USA

When I 'googled' the names of the couple and the very same site came up

Cant comment on the validity of the site, but Choccys pretty good with her research

Still cant see anything on Ancestry and I dare say Choccy has looked too

You know you have Priscilla's birth as Preston 1861....I cant find that birth?

Mike * Report 8 Jun 2010 22:41

No, neither can I.
She appears on the 1881 census aged 20 with mother and stepfather Elizabeth & William Ireland.
Elizabeth was previously Swales and Morrison - nee Gordon.... long story !

Gee

Gee Report 8 Jun 2010 22:54

There's also no birth for Martin that I can see?

Maybe they were from Ireland...many of the Irish professed to be 'English' for fear of being deported

I would take that marriage with some 'question' as it could well be a coincidence

You could check GRO Ireland

I believe Martin was Irish but Priscilla's mother and older sister were born Yorkshire.

Thanks for looking anyway

Thanks MM but my this child is from another branch of the extended family. My Priscilla's parents were John and Elizabeth and she was a mother by 1882.

Unfortunately my ancestry membership lapsed but I do remember trying to make contact with other members at the time and found that half of them never replied, the other half had their facts all wrong by simply copying other trees.... Priscilla Swales for example was down as Priscilla Ireland .

I still think it's too much of a coincidence that it's another couple listed as coming from England with the same names, same birth years and same parents names... plus the fact that no marriage is on either Fbmd or Lancsbmd.
I'd just love to know how they got there and why.
