Please help if you can - When looking up the 1911 census I found my grandfather Charles Bird and his brothers and sisters listed as inmates at 25 Leighton Road> His parents William Bird 1877-1933 b somers town St. Pancras and his wife Hilda nee Franks b cleveland st Marylebone middlesex 1881-1951 are no where to be found. Can anyone help me with this - they were obviously all reunited later but why were the children there was it illness or poverty and why cant I find the parents ?any suggestions please

St Margaret's Receiving Home in Leighton Road was an institution belonging to the St Pancras Union (ie the Workhouse). The receiving homes were set up to receive children when they were first taken into the 'care' of the Union. They were then sent on to 'appropriate' institutions.

Hi, thanks for your help, yes I have them there for 1901 and over the years addressess for the childrens births but lose them for 1911. You may be right or they were looking for work and got lost on the registers. Hopefully will find out one day, thanks again for your input much appreciated.

Hi with reference to my original posting, I have found that children at St Margarets were sent to Leavesden Industrial School Busy Herts which was known locally as St Pancras School. This later was changed into the Leavesden Asylum. Does anyone know how I can find out if my grandfather Charles Bird and his siblings were sent there or only stayed for a short time at the receiving home in Kentish Town? Any pointers gratefully appreciated. ;-)
