Hi Wendy,
There is a museum in Salford where a lot of historical information is housed. I've e-mailed them in the past with a query about an address in Salford and they were very helpful.
You might need to go onto Salford City Council's website.
Good luck,
Georgina

Wendy

Salford is part of Manchester, and you often see in censuses Manchester or Salford interchangeably for birth places.

Second, you possibly gave too much information

If for example, he said on the certificate that his occupation was greengrocer ............. the fact that you specified seller of fruit means that they would say it was wrong

If he said his name was Jack, and you said it was John ............ same thing

I almost NEVER give any more information than the name of the child, and the district

I say YES when asked if I have the GRO reference

Do not give the actual birthdate ....... what you have may well be wrong

I've only ever got ONE wrong certificate doing it this way.

So I suggest that you order again, using the very minimum of information.

They would only say it was the wrong one if one of the details you specified did not match the details on the certificate.
What details did you ask them to check for you to know it was the wrong John ?
Was it simply the date of 1st March ?

Wendy,

You still haven't said whether Vera has posted the correct family and what else do you know about John and his family with which you were able to decide that the Salford one was not correct??

You MUST have more info than you have posted - If you would like us to try to help, PLEASE give us all the info you have.

The thing that strikes is that there are no births for John White in Lancashire in the March 1889 quarter.
Considering he was born on the 1st, it seems odd that he wasn't registered within the next 30 days.

Looking at the June quarter, the only possible is the Salford one you say is wrong.

Failing that ... perhaps he was born before his parents married so has a different surname than the one he grew up with.

Wendy, you need to confirm whether the census that Vera posted for 1891 is the correct family.
If so, note the age gap between John and his sister Mary Ann... another indiciation of a 2nd marriage.

You say that the certificate you sent for was the wrong one. What further information do you have that shows that it is the wrong one?
If his birth was 1st March 1889 then you have also:
Births Jun 1889
White John Salford 8d 178
White John James Liverpool 8b 84
White John William Wirral 8a 475
Is he definitely John White, or could he have been registered with a middle name?
Why did you think he was born in Liverpool, could it have been completely different?
Thanks.
