Hi

I am having huge problems finding people on the census with the surname Burness - the one I am trying to find at the moment is:

Richard Burness - Born 1829 in Shoreditch (London), he married Ann Porter on 13 March 1854 and had two children Louisa born 1854 and William James born 1856, but the only census I have found him on is the 1841 cenus

Any help is appreciated

Astra

Removing that because it is the wrong one. Your Richard was a cabinet maker. There was another child

Richard Burness
Record Type: Baptism
Date: 9 Nov 1869
Father's Name: Richard Burness
Mother's Name: Ann Burness
Parish: St Chad, Haggerston
Borough: Hackney
County: Middlesex

Hi again Astra

Thanks for looking - unfortunately this isn't him, he is the brother of Caroline who was on the other thread you previously looked at for me - his mum and dad are Jacob and Mary

Aaaah thanks Astra - they had a long time between him William - wonder if there was perhaps more?

I will have to have a look

Have you any evidence that they are all still alive and in this country by 1861?
Thanks

Added:
OK, Astra added extra information, so they are.

Hi Maureen

don't think it can be because Richard and Ann had their son Richard in 1869

Thanks Patricia

I wish they would transcribe the names correct I think this is the reason why I cannot find them as Burness - saying that I don't suppose the way it was written does look like Burness

Hi everyone I have just realised what the time is and I really have to start the dinner - would much rather be doing this though

I will be back later today - I just didn't want you all to think that I didn't appreciate you looking for me

THANKS

Louisa in 1881 definitely looks like Purness - only I cannot see any Louisa Purness elsewhere, so think it must be the correct one.

If Richard Burness, 1869, is not correct, then Hobart looks interesting:
1861 England Census
Thomas Hobart
Age: 28 Estimated birth year: abt 1833 Relation: Head Spouse's name: Ann Gender: Male Where born: Lambeth, Surrey, England Civil parish: Shoreditch St Leonard Ecclesiastical parish: Haggerston All Saints County/Island: Middlesex Country: England Registration district: Shoreditch Sub-registration district: Haggerstone East ED, institution, or vessel: 13 Household schedule number: 207
Thomas Hobart 28
Ann Hobart 27
Richard Hobart 8 (previous marriage of Thomas?)
Louisa Hobart 7 (ex Burness?)
William J Hobart 5 (ex Burness?)
Thomas E Hobart 11 Mo (joint child?)
Source Citation: Class: RG9; Piece: 249; Folio: 153; Page: 36; GSU roll: 542599.

I think that's right,Patricia. The baptism in 1869 has the same address as:
1871 census transcription details for: 32 Laburnam Ter, St Leonard Shoreditch

National Archive Reference:

Reg. District: Shoreditch Sub District: Haggerstone, West
Parish: St Leonard Shoreditch Enum. District: 16
Ecclesiastical District: City/Municipal Borough:

County: London, Middlesex

HOBART, Thomas Son M 11 1860 Middlesex
HOBART, Ann Daughter F 9 1862 Middlesex

I'm almost afraid to look and see if Ann marries again!

Maureen

Edit: I wonder if the 8 yr old Richard in 1861 is the one who's baptised in 1869??

Hi Maureen

Sorry I'm confused - Ann Hobart was Ann Burness (married to Richard)?

It gets so confusing with the same first names and the 2nd and 3rd marriages etc
