I think it is wrong, by the way, as there were many people with far more debilitating illnesses than me who did not get free medication.

The thyroid condition did not stop me from working etc. so I idid not need the free medication like those who had diabetes, asthma or cancer, or other serious illnesses who did not get the same free drugs

I have to say though that with the passing of time, I have developed more serious illnesses so I a now grateful that I can get the free 'meds' as I now take so many.

We don't have NI

every province has its own Medical Services Plan, which covers the cost of doctors' visits, hospital stays, etc. Each province also has some form of a Pharmacare Plan which covers the costs of prescription drugs for everyone with an income below a certain level.

Everyone has to pay monthly contributions to MSP unless their income is below $22,000 (or about £9,000), then monthly payments gradually increase until the individual reaches an annual income of $30,000 (ca £14,000).

In BC, MSP provides free GP treatment, free referrals to a specialist by GP (or opthalmologist, or specialist to specialist), free x-rays/MRI's and such like, a bed in a 4 bed ward in hospital for about $20 a night, free treatment/medications etc while in hospital. People over 65 also get 1 free eye test a year. The cost of a care home for seniors or incapable people is included ... but only at a pretty low level.

Prescriptions, spectacles, prostheses, etc have to be paid in full, unless one is below a certain income level.

Some alternative treatments are covered ......... but Canada, and the US to an even greater extent I think, are resistant to non-medical treatments!

When OH was working, the university paid 50% of the premiums for MSP, an Extended Health Insurance with a private company, and Dental Insurance with the same company.

When he retired, we had to take over paying the full cost of premiums every month. We currently pay

MSP ......... $109 per month = $1308 per year

Extended Health .......... $106.39 = $1276.68 per year

Total for the medical for 2011 will be $2584.68 ...... or about £1200

Dental Insurance ...... $80.34 = $964.08

good job he has a good pension!

We claim a lot of the prescription costs from the Extended Health ........ but like all insurance companies, they take every chance to deny reimbursement!

We can also claim medical costs as a "benefit" when we file our annual income tax return ......... and that usually results in a refund of taxes paid to the Federal Government!

My drugs cost at least $4000-4500 a year (ca £2000).
