Do you visit these sites? I found all 3 useful when I was delving into my family connections in Sheffield. The Archive offers 1/2 hour free research. When I contacted them via email they did some looking up in old newspapers for me which resulted in discovering the fate of my fathers sister who died in 1928 as a result of accidentally setting her clothes on fire.

Just got home and opened the dreaded gas/elec bill

I have been re credited lots of money £450!

Its all down to the elec meter being broken for the last 7 months... they cant charge me if the meters not working!

Last summer a little chinese man knocked on my door and got me to switch my supplier and insisted I paid by D/D which I dont like but he calculated £45 a month???
My last bill says I still owe them £380 stupid man. Why cant they just send a bill like I have had for the last 30 years rather than this direct debit rubbish?

You people don't seem to be the ones to ask, as you all seem fairly clueless about the workings of Facebook ;) ... but you might find this interesting.

When I opened my most recent fb account I used one of my multiple gmail addresses. It was one I'd had since early on, back when you had to have invitations to open gmail accounts. I'd wait til I got issued 5 invites, then invite myself to open a couple more, etc.

A colleague of mine in the govt (one of the people who distributes work to me) liked the idea of gmail when I used it to exchange very large files with her. So I issued her an invite I had spare. (She then also set up an account for her govt office, to avoid the problems they were having with their email at the time!).

I had issued that invite from the gmail account I used for this new fb account.

So. As soon as the new fb acount was set up, I was shown a list of people on fb that I "might know".

They were the person I'd given the gmail invite too, and her family and friends.

I've changed the gmail account for that fb account, but it hasn't eliminated those connections. They just keep coming. I seem to be shown every "friend" that person has on fb. (I can tell where they're coming from because the names are mostly French-Canadian like she is.)

So what does this mean?

When I signed up to facebook, it mined my gmail account and took information from it to use on facebook. I assume the other person (and possibly her friends) are getting the same iinfo as me, in reverse.

This strikes me as a hugely serious privacy violation but I don't think I've heard anything about it before.

If you use a gmail account to open a facebook account, facebook somehow has access to your gmail account.

Even if my info isn't going in the other direction to that person -- which I would certainly assume it is -- the facebook information I'm shown about her could tell me things I don't know and she didn't want me to know. If people use gmail for anonymity, they don't intend for their facebook details to be revealed to people they have gmailed.

Anybody had anything like this?
