JC it still doesn't get past the fact to view someone elses tree they need redirecting to this account where as with a multi tree function this wouldn't be an issue:-(

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 3 Mar 2011 20:29

JC

they're not supposed to start any type of city work until after 7 am

............. this crew didn't do any really noisy work until after about 7:45 am, but had obviously been working for some time before that (from the number of smaller twigs and branches on the ground) by the time we heard the noise.

................. and OH was up from about 7 am and eating breakfast in the kitchen which is on the street side, so they had been pretty quiet.

I would guess they probably arrived some time around 7:30am

................... and these trees were on the boulevard right by the side of our house, outside the kitchen and study windows.

well, you've seen the photo I took last year

re multiple accounts

the problem I see is, if they do put a stop to multiple paid accounts

..... would that also stop the owning of several free accounts?

..... and anyway, people could always use different email addresses for their multiple accounts.

Listen still having womens stuff every month means I get an excuse to be a miserable, grump...

On another subject...

You know there has been this Euro court ruling that insureres cannot charge less for 'women' drivers

Well then...how can they charge more for 'young' drivers?

Discrimination is OK amongst the young then!

TootyFruity

TootyFruity Report 3 Mar 2011 20:42

GR membership numbers include all those with multiple accounts as several members when in fact I am four, talk about split personalities :-)

If they had a multi tree function then I could delete the other accounts and have everything in one place and it would cut down the explanations as to the redirection to this account. If GR culled all the accounts which have not been accessed for five years by sending emails to all accounts and saying if no response within say for arguments sake a month, then a truer figure of actual membership numbers can be arrived at. Also, with displaying when someone last logged in, then this could aid on whether it is worth persuing contact or if contact is attempted then expectation of a response can be better judged.

Ginny -- age isn't generally a prohibited ground of discrimination for employment/services etc -- the way it is here is you can't discriminate against someone in employment becaause they are over a certain age, under provincial legislation, but there's no constitutional provision relating to age.

How can they charge more for young drivers? Insurance is a risk game, and the risk for young drivers is multiples of the risk for older drivers.

I don't know how it shakes out for men and women, but I doubt it is nearly what the ratio is for young/old. Young age by itself is very strongly correlated with risk, for driving. With sex I think there would be more other factors in play.

Is Tracey still doing ER lookups, jax? Re the one with his two threads.

I haven't seen her around lately.

Dea

Dea Report 3 Mar 2011 21:09

I agree Janey,

With driving, there is obviously a risk factor which comes into play - It is not just descrimination on age (young or old) , or sex - they take into account various age groups, sex groups, number of accidents in each, etc., and work out the risk factors, then load premiums accordingly!

How many times have you followed someone who looks about 90 - nose on the windscreen because they cannot see and driving at about 10 miles per hour.

AND - how many times have you been overtaken at about 90 miles per hour in a dangerous place by a young person with speakers throbbing out hip-hop or R+B (or something with even more 'throbb') ?

The 'risk factors' ARE relevant and they should be allowed to take them into consideration !

I am not sayind that the 'old' and the 'young' are the only 'guilty' ones but I do think that you should be allowed to take these factors into consideration !!

Gee

Gee Report 3 Mar 2011 21:35

Yep, I agree too JC.

Insurance is based on risk and stats produce the most likely to have accidents

So what I want to know is why has the Euro court ruled it unfair to give the safer drivers (Women) discount?

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 3 Mar 2011 21:44

I suspect the generalization doesn't work as well with women as with men, possibly with more women driving in the last few decades. Statistical averages may be one thing, but there may be way more factors that could come into play.

Why not look up the decision and see what the rationale is? ;)

The main thing is that there are lines we draw for what we consider to be improper discrimination. Stats might show that Christians are worse insurance risks than Hindus. Would that be good grounds for charging a particular Christian more for insurance?

The evidence for young drivers being high-risk really is just overwhelming. Programs like we have here, graduated licences that include zero blood alcohol level, no night driving, no passengers, are apparently really working to reduce the risk. Also, young drivers get a hefty rate cut if they take formal training.

Jonesey

Jonesey Report 3 Mar 2011 21:44

why has the Euro court ruled it unfair to give the safer drivers (Women) discount?

Because they are total idiots would be my guess.

The sooner we stop having anything to do with the European Union the better.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 3 Mar 2011 21:50

Certainly is a wide range of editorial opinion on the matter. ;) From the usual suspects, what one might suspect ... kinda like the one just above here ...

One thing I'd meant to mention was: backlash.

For every gain women make to make up for past discrimination and worse, somebody is waiting for their chance to take advantage.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2011/mar/03/insurers-scamming-all-equal

Between male and female drivers under 25 there is a significant difference, not in numbers of accidents but in severity. Maybe men are more prone to high-risk behaviour, or maybe they don't watch the road because they're too busy putting on mascara, or maybe it's the social factor that women, especially ones who've just passed their test, let men do the motorway driving.

In the age groups over 25 these accidents level out until drivers hit 60, whereupon women get more dangerous. This is sometimes put down to the fact that we haven't covered as many miles as men, having forced them to do the driving in our early 20s, and are therefore less experienced. Or perhaps we're just incredibly angry.

... Underneath the vexing spectacle of feminism backfiring, and more important than any distinction between the recklessness of a young man and the baffling durability of an old woman, is the fact that we're really just looking at an insurance scam – not by claimants but the companies themselves.

There was never any huge difference between male and female drivers over a lifetime ...

... It's a giant, petty example of divide and rule, the thrill of downward comparison pressed into commercial use. The court was right to quash the insurance distinction between men and women not because it was discriminatory, but because it was a ruse.

Jonesey

Jonesey Report 3 Mar 2011 21:55

JC, Apologies if it was not clear to you but my "Idiots" comment was describing the European Court, not women drivers.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 3 Mar 2011 21:55

Here's the judgment:

http://curia.europa.eu/jcms/upload/docs/application/pdf/2011-03/cp110012en.pdf

and here's another opinion, considering the nature of insurance:

http://www.economist.com/blogs/democracyinamerica/2011/03/insurance_and_rights

Should people who smoke pay more for health insurance? People who ski? People with high-stress jobs? How about women of child-bearing age, surely they're a higher risk for more medical expenses than men, at least. ...

Insurance is about sharing the risk.
