at least a thousand you're welcomes, lol.

If you do decide to trace your family farther, be sure to do it by posting again in this thread since so much information is here already. Any time you want to find it, just click on 'my threads' in the list of tips on the left-hand side of your screen.

Glad to have helped!

Here's a bit more, 4 people here at GenesReunited have Sarah Lowther born in 1876 in Cassop Durham in their threes. No one seems to have her children though, so they must be related to a sibling or parent of Sarah Jane.

You should get your grandparents' marriage certificate if you want to check that your dad's father was Sarah Jane's brother, or even if you just want to trace your ancestry more, that's where you will need to start. It will show his father Thomas Lowther's age and father's name. You can find it at Freebmd but I will put it here

Marriages Mar 1911
Barrow Lily Durham 10a 530 <<<
Higginson Jane Durham 10a 530
Hinds Matthew Durham 10a 530
Lowther Thomas Durham 10a 530 <<<

and you can order it here

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

I tried looking for the death of the young John Maudling but as you said he was drowned at sea so his death is probably not in the index if his body was lost.

Now you have some more names to search in trees for from time to time, you never know, you might meet someone who is just as glad to know that their uncle John Maudling's name was such pride for your dad.

Hi Bruce...
If I have it right she must be like you said the Sister of my Dads Grandfather...
You really are a very clever man, I thank you very much indeed

Oh, I missed your own kind compliments! You are very welcome.

Now you see if you had told us the story first, we would have known what to look for. But stories are often wrong and lead us astray, true, and this way it matches up right, lol.

This looks like the same family in 1891 and sure enough there is a younger son Thomas

Name: Thomas Lowther
Age: 8
Estimated birth year: abt 1883
Relation: Son
Father's Name: Thomas
Mother's Name: Sarah
Gender: Male
Where born: Sunderland, Durham, England

Civil parish: Coxhoe
Ecclesiastical parish: Kelloe
Town: East Hetton
County/Island: Durham
Country: England

Registration district: Durham

Household Members:
Name Age
Thomas Lowther 37
Sarah Lowther 37
Elizabeth Lowther 12
Thomas Lowther 8
Porecilla Lowther 6

Yes it is the same family, father Thomas was born in Maryport and is a coal miner. Are this Thomas and Sarah your dad's grandparents?

here she is in 1881

Name: Sarah Louther
Age: 5
Estimated birth year: abt 1876
Relation: Daughter
Father's Name: Thomas
Mother's Name: Sarah
Gender: Female
Where born: Cassop, Durham, England

Civil parish: Thornley
County/Island: Durham
Country: England

Street Address: 6 Water St
Registration district: Easington

Household Members:
Name Age
Thomas Louther 27
Sarah Louther 27
Mary Ann Louther 8
Sarah Louther 5
Elizabeth Louther 3
Physilla Louther

so the question is, is she a sister of your dad's grandfather I think

or a sister of your dad's father, your dad's parents married in 1911, so his father Thomas could have been a younger brother of Sarah Jane, and that would mean that a son of Sarah Jane would be your father's first cousin, which would be as he said.

chrissiex Report 2 Jul 2010 23:00

I've been trying to lend you a hand with those people

Marriages Dec 1897
Lowther Sarah Jane Easington 10a 650
Maudling William Easington 10a 650

but I have not made much headway because I cant find them in 1901. I think this could be Sarah Jane in 1891

Name: Sarah Jane Lowther
Age: 16
Estimated birth year: abt 1875
Relation: Servant
Gender: Female
Where born: Cossop, Durham, England

Civil parish: Coxhoe
Ecclesiastical parish: Kelloe
Town: East Hetton
County/Island: Durham
Registration district: Durham

but no luck with William Maulding. Except in 1911 there is this household

MAUDLING WILLIAM RITSON 1878 33 Sedgefield Durham
MAUDLING SARAH JANE 1878 33 Sedgefield Durham
MAUDLING JOHN 1900 11 Sedgefield Durham
MAUDLING WILLIAM 1904 7 Sedgefield Durham
MAUDLING HANNAH 906 5 Sedgefield Durham
MAUDLING MARY JANE ELLEN 1910 9 MONTHS

so that is them I think.

edit

this must be her birth

Births Jun 1876
LOWTHER Sarah Jane Durham 10a 444

so she must be the one in the 1891 census who is a servant because there is no other Sarah Jane Lowther born around that time

Well I still think your amazing !!!!
My Dad told me many moons ago that he was given the name as a Cousin had drowned at sea....
I have never known if he meant it was a Christian name or Surname..But now I know it must have been a Surname...
Whatever anyway he was proud of it...
Someone might see this and recognize the name..
I have tried to find out but alas...
Thankyou very much for your time

Christine just go to Freebmd and search for marriages between various surnames

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl

when you find one click on the page number to see the other name or names on the page

You may not know but when someone clicks on your name here it shows your surname so I was able to find your dad's death record, you said his name 'was', and it showed his birthday, so I found his birth record and it showed his mother's surname. It looks like magic but it is really just that this website doesnt conceal your identity, you can fix that by taking your surname out of your account details if you like.

Christine

Christine Report 2 Jul 2010 22:43

Thats Amazing !!!! and correct..please can you tell me more of the marriage

chrissiex

chrissiex Report 2 Jul 2010 22:41

your dad's parents were Barrow and Lowther?

there is one Maudling andLowther marriage in 1897 but it is a female Lowther to a male Maudling so it can't be the source and there is no Barrow and Maudling marriage.

As Jan says have you tried going back farther? It could also possibly have been the surname of a family friend or godparent or something like
