Unless you see it on Eleanor's birth certificate, you can't be sure that James is her father.
He may possibly be her stepfather as his 2nd wife is somewhat younger.

I have a Gt Grandmother written on census as "daughter" to an elderly couple.
It turns out that they are her grandparents who brought her up as their own.

Before 1837 (when registration began) you need the parish registers.
Some, but by no means all, are online at

Failing that it's a manual trawl of the record books and films at the local records office or in some cases at the churches themselves.
