One of my ancestors, Arthur Collard LLOYD, was born around 1898 in Victoria, OZ. He signed up at the start of WW1 in Armadale, Victoria so I think he came from that area and he was working as a window dresser when he signed up. Is it possible to find out a birth or census return which might give some hints on how to get back any earlier? Many thanks in advance for any advice.

I wonder if this is Wm Chas' death...

The Argus, Thursday 25 January 1923
THEATRE EMPLOYEE WOUNDED.
Charles William Lloyd, aged 45 years, married, Sutherland Road, Armadale, was found wounded in a room near the manager's office, Armadale Picture theatre, High street, last night. Lloyd was a casual employee. When Mr Dudley Thompson, the manager, found him he was wounded in the right-side of his head, and had a revolver in his right hand. Thompson [should say Lloyd] was removed to the Alfred Hospital. His condition is critical. He has been out of regular work for a considerable time. The audience left the theatre ignorant of what had happened.

The Brisbane Courier, Friday 26 January 1923
PICTURE EMPLOYEE COMMITS SUICIDE.
MELBOURNE, January 25.
While a picture show was in progress at an Armadale theatre, Charles William Lloyd (45), casual employee at the plate went into the manager's office and shot himself. He died later. He was a married man with seven children.

Omg, his wife Alice Josine (Arthur's mother) died in Armadale the following year - 1924 - aged 53! Her parents are both shown as 'unknown'; the 1895 marriage reg gives her birthplace as London.

Those poor children, even the ones who were adult age at the time.

Here they are in order:
1. Ernest Wm b. 1895 Armadale, d. 1898 South Yarra aged 2
2. Arthur Collard b. 1897 South Yarra (reg 22771)
3. Chas Francis b. 1899 South Yarra, d. 1916 Melb East aged 16
4. Unnamed male b. 1903 South Yarra, d. 1903 days old
5. Walt Benyon b. 1904 South Yarra, m. Catherine Emma WILLIAMS 1929
6. Geo Pateman b. 1907 Armadale, d. 1918 Melb East aged 11
7. Alice Muriel Collard b. 1910 Armadale, ?m. Harry UNSWORTH 1936
8. Hilda Margaret b. 1912 Armadale, m. Fredk Victor THOMAS 1933
9. Frederick Colin b. 1917 Armadale, d. 1920 Armdale aged 2

Oh dear so many children dying, no wonder the poor man was depressed. And out of regular work to support his family too.

I think this is most likely her arrival, unassisted and travelling alone:

Here's an article about the death of Chas jnr, he tragically drowned:

The Argus, Monday 14 February 1916
DROWNING ACCIDENTS.
TRAGEDY AT MORDIALLOC.
TWO YOUTHS PERISH.
Mordialloc beach was the scene of a double drowning accident yesterday afternoon, the victims being Clarence Dwan, 12 years of age, living in Northcote road, Armadale, and Charles Lloyd, 17 years of age, of High street, Armadale. Two of their companions, Douglas and Robert Norman, of Clarendon street, Malvern, had a narrow escape from death being rescued from the water only when they were thoroughly exhausted.
The four lads journeyed yesterday afternoon from Armadale to Mordialloc, arriving at about half-past 2 o'clock. They immediately went in to bathe and shortly afterwards Douglas Norman noticed that Lloyd, who had gone beyond his depth, was in difficulties. Norman at once went to his friend's assistance, but was unable to give much aid owing to the strong under tow, which a little later brought Robert Norman into trouble. Douglas Norman managed to take his brother to some rocks, where he held him above the water until both were rescued by Ernest Mitchell, of Fitzroy street, Fitzroy, and a companion, Lems Henn.
By this time Dwan and Lloyd had disappeared, and some time elapsed before their bodies could he located and brought ashore. Life was then pronounced extinct by Dr. Grindrod. who had been summoned to the beach, and the bodies were removed by Constable Murray to the Morgue, where an inquest will be held.

The inquest gave 'accident drowned' as cause of death.

The Argus, Tuesday 15 February 1916
LLOYD.—On the 13th February (accidentally drowned), Charles Francis, second eldest son of Charles W. and Alice Lloyd, 779 High street, Armadale, aged 16 years.

There is also an inquest for the death of George 'Tateman' LLOYD in 1918, cause of death 'injury motorcar'. Perhaps he was struck by a car? :-(

Wow! I knew Arthur had a sister in Oz (his niece came over to the UK once and I met her when I was a teenager) but I didn't know anything of the above had happened at all. I'm flabbergasted! Is the inquest for George Pateman Lloyd 1918 online anywhere? I've been to the newspaper site kindly suggested above but can't seem to find it. I can't belive how unlucky this branch of the family is...
Thanks so much folks!

Hi Louise
The inquest info came from a CD so you won't find that in the papers. But the stuff about his father's suicide is there.
I believe you can view inquests at the archives office, maybe someone at www.raogk.org can help if they can get there in person (I can't sorry, I'm in WA!)
It is fascinating stuff, if quite tragic really. How is/was Arthur related to you?

Louise

Louise Report 22 Jul 2010 09:33

Arthur was my uncle's step father and my family used to stay with him and his wife in Torbay area of UK every year when we were young. He passed away shortly after I finished uni. He never lost his Aussie accent!
