I can find whom I believe to be my grandfather SAMUEL BIRD born around Manchester circa 1890, his father was called Edwin and mother Joanna (or Johanna or even Johannah). I can trace them in the 1891, 1901 amd 1911 census reports, but cannot find any marriage or birth records in BMD so that I can obtain certificates.

Can anyone throw any light why and where I should start looking next please?

Have you found any possible marriage for the father?

Samuel might have been born before the marriage

None at all, I have searched a few years before and after Samuel was born for a marriage, but nothing. I can't find a marriage between Edwin and Joanna, nor a birth record for Samuel, this is after searching 15 years either way.

Does anyone know if the BMD records are not yet complete for around 1890 for births and marriages, because if they were, i would have expected to at least found some record?

Hi again Richard

Thanks for your further reply, that does show more detail, but you have spelled the surname BURD nor BIRD. How was the original entry spelt where you obtained those details from?

Madmeg Report 21 Jul 2010 20:48

Peter, the first thing that worries is me is that you only BELIEVE that your grandfather is Samuel Bird. Please tell me that you didn't mean to say that, but that you KNOW he is Samuel Bird, at least as far as it is possible to know. Otherwise we are going up the wrong tree.

So, is that the right family on the 1901 census? If so, he was born in 1887, no - the transcription is wrong, he is aged 10. Joanna is born Chorley, so that marriage that Richard found seems good:

Marriages Jun 1890 (>99%)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BURD Edwin Chorley 8e 773
JOLLY Johanna Chorley 8e 773

There is a birth of Samuel Burd, Manchester, Dec 1890, 8d/272.

Peter

Peter Report 22 Jul 2010 13:56

Hi Madmeg

The reason I said I believe, is that I assume the Samuel Bird I had found in the Census reports was my grandfather. I know for a fact that my Grandfather was called Samuel Bird, my problem was confirming which of the Samuel Bird's I found was the correct one.

Thanks to all that responded to my cry for help, it looks like I may have found the correct one!

Potty Report 22 Jul 2010 15:00

Peter, do you have your grandfather's marriage cert, to confirm his father's name?

Peter

Peter Report 23 Jul 2010 15:04

Hi Potty

Yes I do have my grandparents marriage certificate that does confirm my grandfathers name. It also shows his army service number, but I drew a blank searching those records as well. It also shows my grandfathers father's name and occupation that is in line with what I traced and what has been shown on this thread.

Thanks for your post.
