Hello
I am researching Eliza Griffiths nee Simpson. I am pretty sure she was born 1838 Derby. Christening 16.7.1838 St Johns. Parents Andrew & Mary. She married a John Alexander Griffiths who was born in Birmingham about 1831. This info is from children's death certificates in Aus. The only marriage I can find is
Eliza Simpson age 19 spinster 52 Bristol St - father Andrew Simpson a Tailor to John Clarke age 26 Merchants Clerk - 22 Hanley St - father James Clarke Carpenter. 1856 St Lukes Church Parish of Birmingham Warwick. Can anyone find another marriage seems strange that they changed their name to Griffiths when they came to Aus. Also if Clarke was their name can anyone find them on 1841 or 1851 census or any info on their parents.
Many thanks
Vicki

Hi Vicki,

I've been trying to see if Eliza had married someone before she married John. I thought I found one in 1829 but she had a different father and was a widow.

If I come up with anything I'll let you know

Wow Nicky you are a gem. Their first registered child was born 1862 in Tumut NSW but a possible child was born 1859, Clarence, no record of his birth but he appears on John's death cert. Could have been born in Engalnd. I have looked up my access to shipping but can't find them either as Clarke or Griffiths.
Cheers
& thanks Nicky

I`m just hoping that i may find this James in 1851 with son John a Merchants clerk or something similar.

Afraid it got way past my bedtime to keep searching.....there are hundreds of James Clarkes, but not many who were Carpenters.

Do you have the witness`s names from their marriage cert.?

There is a public tree on Ancestry with this family, they have the same marriage as you down Eliza Simpson to John Clarke, who then appears to change in to John Alexander Griffiths.

The only reasonable explanation I can come up with for this is that John Clarkes father died, and his mother remarried and became a Griffiths and he took on that name.

If that is the case, I`m wasting my time checking all the James Clarkes who are Carpenters on the 1881 census, and then trying to find them earlier.....I chose that one as the 1881 on Familysearch is very quick to check through...I find ancestry quite slow....

Well I will keep looking for you,as i hate being beaten by a mystery.

Hi Nicky
I will look up that tree on Genes. Witnesses to the marriage were James & Elizabeth Clarke.
Thanks again
