Trying to find out occupation of Julia Howes, in 1911 census she was stated as a stewardess. Does that mean she work on ships, or was a chambermaid, At the time she was in Twickenham , her neice husband work in a Hotel.
If any one has any help with occupation, this would be wonderful, many thanks in advance.

could she have been a stewardess on a ship

Dea

Dea Report 21 Aug 2010 15:45

The obvious thing to do is to find her on previous census to see what she did then. - Unfortunately, I don't seem to be able to find her ???

Flick Report 21 Aug 2010 16:29

I don't think that females were employed on board ships on the 19th century......could be wrong, but, it's unlikely

Flick

Flick Report 21 Aug 2010 16:31

This (1851) fits with her age in 1911, but doesn't help in any other way

Thank you for all replies, and thanks Cynthia, notes about posting, all your replies are correct to the information I have found out.
I have also found out she left a will today, so will be onto this.
Still need to to find out what a Stewerdess means in 1911.
I have a guess that she may of travelled to America, but cannot find any records yet.
Once again I thank every one for the help.

Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 22 Aug 2010 18:39

cant think she was a stewardess on a ship at aged 72 in 1911 ???

She was a dressmaker working on own account on the 1901 census and living in Southampton so
perhaps she was involved in seamster business re shipping then

the annotation, late is in brackets against her occ on the 1911 indicating she no longer did that work

that I think is correct, but where do I find the information

Paulette

Paulette Report 22 Aug 2010 19:17

yes i just found this today, its her, I was looking for her in Middlesex and Surrey, but did the date thing and it was the correct for her age, was looking a long time.
Also found a probate record which really confirms relatives.
Either being a brother or nephews I think is more likely.

Thankyou every one so far, just need to find out the missing years now

Paulette

Paulette Report 22 Aug 2010 19:34

Any idea how I could find that out, Perhaps maybe because of her accent being in the London suburds in 1911, she may of said seamtriss which sounded like stewardess, she was really a dressmaker.
I really think, you may of hit the nail on the head.
But still Julia is still mising on many census.
Where did she go too?

Well it was head of house who filled the info in on the 1911 perhaps he wasnt that clear what she was called she was a dressmaker/seamstress and he pulled out the wrong description for her. Wonder how she is described on the death cert /

Hi Paula
Could it say 'Seamstress'?
Love Sue

Corinne

Corinne Report 7 Sep 2010 12:40

I think it should be 'seamstress' too.

Shirley~I,m getting the hang of it Report 7 Sep 2010 12:44

It probably should be seamstress however on the actual census sheet the head of house has definately put her as Stewardess -late
