Incredible coincidence - I sent for the death certificate of Henry Arthur Wedd in Croydon in 1889 in the hope that it would be "my" Henry's father. Sadly, it was not, but the weirdest thing - Henry died in May 1889 from a fractured skull following a fall. "My" Henry died in 1927 from a fractured skull following a fall!
Note: The Croydon Henry was a member of the Stock Exchange, "my" Henry's father was a labourer, so, the search goes on.
I tried Tribal pages, but no Henry Wedd - so back to BMD and census for yet another try.

Thank you all so much, between you you have given me some more info to dig in to. The death of a Henry Arthur Wedd in Croydon in 1889 could well be significant, as it is "my" Henry who is a boarder in Croydon in the 1901 census.

The children of Henry & Martha that I knew of were Annie (died as a baby), Isabella (my mother in law!), George, Stanley & Florence (twins, Florence died as baby), Caroline, Henry and Mabel (died as a baby). I didn't know about Albert Edward or James, so will check these out.

The Henry Wedd I am looking for was a labourer, and was at his son's marriage in 1886, so none of the above matches, but thanks for the info.

Found him in 1911 census - born in 1859 in Enfield, Middx., but still can't find any trace of his father Henry.
