Still trying to sort out the original question of Robert's parents, his father was probably John Smith born about 1776 and married to Sarah.
I have now found a record for Ann Smith baptised at Chippenham Cambs in 1815 named as the daughter of John Smith. Robert was born 1808 so they could have been siblings.
There were very few Smiths recorded in the village. However, there was an army place nearby and there is an army link to a John Smith at the Baptism. Anyone out there who can shred further clarity of light on this will be brilliant!

Hannah had a son called Richard in about 1828. So I was hoping she might be down as a widow; church banns usually said.....
Spinster of this parish or Widow.............otherwise Richard must have been illegitimate.

Sorry Sheila but how do you know Robert was her second husband?

Sheila

Sheila Report 3 Dec 2010 13:08

Robert was Hannah Froggert's second husband, I wonder what her original/maiden name was?
If Astra or anyone could help , please, it would be fantastic!

I have found his death certificate which shows by his age that he was born in 1808.

Robert Smith is written as being from Chipnah, Suffolk in the 1851 census, so perhaps that's right and the later census birthplace is wrong.

Thanks for the efforts everyone is making. I still want to locate church records for the marriage Astra gave.
Chippenham in Cambs is only a small place so the Anne Smith could be related. I wonder if the school (closed now) had records?

(online Database search for Baptisms and Burials 1801 - 1837 Cambridgeshire)

Can't see anything for Chippenham, only an Anne, 1815 daughter of John.

Sorry Sheila but I was taking her age from the 1871 where it is given as 66 and the 1851 where she is 47 and 57 in the 1861. In the 1841 ages can be anything up to 5 years out either way as they were rounded up or down so you can't assess her true age from that I'm afraid. 1804 seems about right as you have to remember that people were asked their age by the enumerator and would give the age they thought they were at that time.

Hannah Smith
Age: 47
Estimated birth year: abt 1804
Relation: Wife
Spouse's name: Robert Smith
Gender: Female
Where born: Bedworth, Warwickshire, England
Civil parish: Bedworth
County/Island: Warwickshire
Household Members:
Name Age
Robert Smith 40
Hannah Smith 47
George Smith 16
James Smith 14
Henry Smith 11
Hannah Smith 7

May help you a little I hope - Many people miss the trick of just using their Search Engine - there is so much "online" these days, many are shocked by what can be found ....
I have found alot of info just from people who write blogs and include family history in them, I even found a friend I had seen for 20 yrs by reading one ..

Happy hunting

I appreciate the suggestion, but am not sure about the birth year as she was 35 in the 1941 census and 66 in 1871.

Unfortunately there were no marriage certificates before 1837. There are no Parish records on the IGI for Chippenham so he was probably baptised elsewhere if he was done at all.

Sheila Report 5 Sep 2010 21:17

I wonder how I can get the marriage certificate details for Robert and Hannah in 1832 ? Then I would have the fathers' names. Help?

Sheila

Sheila Report 5 Sep 2010 21:11

Dear Terence,
I need the Chippenham village in Cambridgeshire not the place in Wiltshire, but thanks for trying to help.

Astra

Astra Report 5 Sep 2010 21:09

The problem is he wasn't born in Chippenham in Wiltshire he was born in Chippenham near Newmarket in Suffolk and there are hundreds of births for Robert Smiths in that area.

ROBERT SMITH

Marriages:
Spouse: HANNAH FROGGETT
Family
Marriage:
02 DEC 1832 Holy Trinity, Coventry, Warwick, England

So it would appear that the Richard Froggatt with them in the 1841 census is her son either by a previous marriage or born illegitimately

Robert Smith was born in 1810/1811 in Chippenham, I would like to know about his parents.
According to the 1841 Census for Warks he married Hannah from Bedworth. They were both alive for the 1871 Census. They had children called George, James, Henry and Hannah. James was my GGG Grandfather and I can follow through to the present.
Can anyone help with the Chippenham ancestry, please?
