Dear Sylvia and Susan,
Thankyou very much for the information that you have both found most of which was new to me . Not sure my ancestor would have been at Battle of Copenhagen but it is certainly very interesting and I will try and look into this . It always amazes me how you volunteers on here can find such information

Somewhere last night I saw a reference that Charles Meredyth was a Major in the Royal Marines ... most of the references (marriage, baptism of children etc) just say Major in the Army.

I have just found the following on ancestry, and wonder if this is the same Charles

Edinburgh Weekly Journal (Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland)

In this journal is published a series of letters from Nelson to The Lords of the Admiralty, one particular letterr was reporting on a seabattle with the Danish fleet off Copenhagen.

Among the list of officers wounded is:-

Alcmene:- Mr Charles Meredith, Lieutenant of the Marines.

BTW ..... are the ages on that 1851 Census correct?????????

If so ...... Maria was only 14 or 15 when she ahd Juliet

AND they lied on this marriage

..... if Juliet was 22 in 1851, she couldn't have been of Full Age in 1847

Hi All
I am trying to find this one family on the censuses but I have run into a few problems and was wondering if anyone could help me out.
Alexander Cowie was born c1827 in Westminster and his wife Juliet Meredyth 1826 in Chlesea.
I can find them on the 1851 census, according to which they are living with Juliet's mother Maria Meredyth (b.c1812 according to other censuses in Kimberley, Norfolk). However, Maria is on the previours page to them which I cannot seem to find. Maria remarried at some point to a Joseph Durning and her maiden name was Jarvis but I have tried searching for her under all 3 surnames and still cannot find her.
On the 1861 census I can find Maria living with her two oldest grandsons George (b.1851 Woolwich) and Burton Cowie (b.c1854 Woolwich) but I cannot find Alexander, Juliet and their daughter Josephine (b.c1856 Woolwhich). Thanks for any helpin advance.
