Oops, and I should have been a little bit clearer -- specifically, none of the Dorothy Ms in those various Sleep and Appleby marriages were named Wheeler.

However, there is always the possibility that one was a second marriage so the person could have been Wheeler by birth.

I'll have a go at checking that out if I get a moment later on.

That's why it's good to browse the boards a bit first. ;) The chance of a related person reading a post -- figure those odds! The chance of other members being able to help -- very high.

There were two Doris Mauds with that birthdate who died after 1969 (when birthdates started being included in the deaths index) and by 2005 (the last available year). Keeping in mind that it's not uncommon for the person registering a death to get the birthdate wrong.

Name: Doris Maud Appleby
Birth Date: 23 Jul 1907
Death Registration Month/Year: 1983
Registration district: Colchester
Inferred County: Essex
Volume: 9
Page: 2157

Name: Doris Maud Sleep
Birth Date: 23 Jul 1907
Death Registration Month/Year: 1970
Registration district: Plymouth
Inferred County: Devonshire
Volume: 7a
Page: 1554

There are 3 marriages of a Doris M to a Sleep, two of them in Plymouth: 1931 and 1946.

There are 5 marriages of a Doris M to an Appleby, including 1 in Hackney 1928 and one in Romford 1943, as well as 1 in Ealing 1956.

So it's not likely that either of those Doris Mauds is your DM, unfortunately.

Expanding the search to include 1906 and 1908 -- it's not uncommon for a birthday to be right but the year slightly out -- doesn't produce any more possibles.

So that's one possibility for finding her ruled out, unfortunately.

Sorry Janey - I didn't realise that I had become part of an investigative team!

Yes I have a birth certificate I believe to be hers - both (she and my father)were born at Queen Charlotte Hospital

23 July 1907 - unfortunately she didn't have a named father either. Her mother was a servant in Harley Street then, but not by 1911.

I have a suspicion mother died unmarried in 1922 as I haven't yet found any marrige records

There are quite a few marriages of Doris/Doris M in the general Sussex area around the right sort of time. And yes I do know that Sussex is the right place because that is where she lived with my father. Then for some reason he was adopted and his first names reversed - Frank Harold (by the way I have no idea why I put Francis in an earlier post, sorry for any confusion)

The purpose of my original query was to see if anyone, perhaps family of a spouse of Doris, was tracking down the Wheeler line and had come to a dead end with Harold Frank. I think it most unlikely that there are any long lost relatives of mine out there

Carol, why dole out information in little dribs and drabs like this? It's hardly possible for anyone to help without having the information you have!

You have her birth certificate??

Well what was her date of birth?

If she died after 1969, her exact date of birth will be shown in the deaths index (assuming the informant knew it). That index can be searched at Ancestry by given name(s) + birthdate, with no surname.

It could be possible to find someone with her given names and birthdate and then track back to see whether the surname matches a marriage of a Doris M Wheeler. This has been done successfully here on many occasions.

Do let us know how you are sure you have the right birth certificate, though. -- Sorry, you said you're guessing. Well, we could still try to track *that* Doris Wheeler and see where the trail leads. But not without the information you have -- all the info from the birth certificate.

Harold Francis was born in Marylebone but his mother's address was in East Grinstead, which is where he grew up. I am guessing that his mother was also born in Marylebone and have her birth certificate too.

I have also attempted to find out about the Stammers family who had the nurse child in 1911 - that got nowhere either.

I really want to know if she ever married

Guess I'll have to wait a little longer

Thanks for all your help anyway

Densirl, the chances of a connection here seem smaller than infinitessimal!

Carol, if you can explain a little better re the questions asked here -- was Harold born in Marylebone, and Doris gave an address in East Grimstead when she registered the birth? If you have the birth certificate, does it give any other info? (sometimes the mother's age/occupation is given) -- there's the possibility of more help.

The chances are that Doris was born before 1911, so she would be Doris Maud rather than Doris M on her birth registration. Those two that Mike posted seem the likeliest. If you got those birth certificates you would have an exact birthdate. If the person died after 1969, the given names and birthdate might be tentatively matched to a death record, and the search backward could be done to see whether there was a Wheeler marriage to the surname in question.

Carol, did you ever get your father's original birth certificate to see what info there was about Doris Maud? Have you any idea where he was born - I posted a birth record above.

Information such as the address might yield clues.

Harold Frank Wheeler (my father) was adopted and took the surname Buckland. If anyone was tracing Doris they would have come up with a dead end. I was hoping that I might find that very person.

I have no idea if she ever married, but I have found the Brighton ones and a lot of DMWs in the Marylebone and Sussex areas

Thank you all any way

This is the only Harold F Wheeler I saw for 1926:

Surname First name(s) Mother District Vol Page
Births Mar 1926 (>99%)
Wheeler Harold F Wheeler Marylebone 1a 704

Out of area, but that doesn't necessarily count for anything.

Sorry, do not understand quite what you are trying to do.
If you want to find out about Doris then:
If Doris married then her Father's name should be on the wedding certificate.
If she did not marry, do you know when she died, so you can get an approximate date of birth? (Or if she married you can also try for date of birth)
There are several Doris M Wheelers born 1900 to 1912.
