SylviaInCanada Report 9 Oct 2010 01:16

not necessarily twins

many families often had more than one child baptized at the same ceremony ..... it saved money!

OR it could be that there was no vicar in the village, that one came round at irregualr intervals.

Very rare to find mother's maiden name in the early days .......... don't forget women were chattels of their fathers and then of their husbands.

Ozibird

Ozibird Report 6 Oct 2010 07:25

I ask about dealer in marine stores because of the following. It may be a grandiose name for hawker.

In 1841 William Norma, abt 1805, Magdalen Street, St Mary Magdalen, Essex - not born in county; Box Maker; also in household is Elizabeth, not born in county [possibly his wife, but not necessarily so as 1841 doesn't give relationships.]

is living next to ..

Isaac Richardson abt 1798 Essex, England St Mary Magdalen, Essex - born in county; Painter; also in household is Hannah, abt 1824, born in county [daughter perhaps?]

Considering this in 1851

1851 England Census
Name: Willm Norman
Age: 39
Estimated birth year: abt 1812
Relation: Head
Spouse's name: Hannah Norman
Gender: Male
Where born: Strood, Kent, England
Civil parish: Colchester St Mary Magdalen
County/Island: Essex
Country: England
Street Address: Church Lane, Magdalene Street

Occupation: Hawker

Registration district: Colchester
Sub-registration district: Colchester First Ward
Household Members: Name Age
Willm Norman 39
Hannah Norman 29 - Hawker's wife; born in Colchester
William Alberta 9
Isaac Norman 4
John Norman 1 9 MO [looks like '1 & 9 month' on image]
Elizabeth Whiley 48 - visitor; Box Maker; born in Shoreditch; deaf
Isaac Richardson 30 - brother-in-law; Dealer; born in Colchester

In 1861 he is a Band Box Maker.
In 1871and 1881 he is a Box Maker.

You're not alone Michael. Family history grabs you that way.

You say William was a dealer in marine stores in 1843. Is that from a certificate of some kind?

michael Report 5 Oct 2010 23:51

all the family lived in colchester ( and some still do but i have never met them) but i suppose it stands to reason that they lived in strood!!! when they had william
i did wonder why one child was born in suffolk i assumed it was in hospital in suffolk
what was williams first wifes name,

this is fantasic thank you very much

ps its funny that when your young you dont care who your distant relative are but has you get older, i'm 67 it seems to matter.

william 1843 dealer in marine stores

Ozibird

Ozibird Report 5 Oct 2010 22:14

It looks like William was married before Hannah. The eldest on 1851 is William Albert born Suffolk, 4 years before William's marriage to Hannah. Also a 5 year gap between William jnr and the next child Isaac who looks as if he was named after his grandfather Richardson.

Births Sep 1842
Norman William Albert Sudbury 12 416
Sudbury is the reg'n district for Cavendish William jnr's birthplace.

Also in your other thread you think parents, James & Mary, may be in Colchester. Why?

Ozibird

Ozibird Report 5 Oct 2010 21:31

Who was a dealer? James or William?

Is this the occupation from the marriage cert?
