I seem to have made a mess of this thread, I deleted it by accident, someone sent me a census record for William but it was not my realation thankyou anyway.
My query was something like this - I was looking for my Grt Grt Grandad William CANWELL b1833 I have what may be him and his brother John in a union workhouse in Peterborough 1841, then in spalding 1851, then for certain in York 1861 and Middlesbrough 1871, I am hoping for some definate conection between Peterborough to Middlesbrough, I would also love to know how to find out how the children came to be in the workhouse and is it possible to find out who put them there?

Northamptonshire Record Office has the records for Peterborough Workhouse (at least the ones that survive). They have admission and discharge registers from 1836 to 1930 so you could find details there.

The record office address is:-

Wootton Hall Park, Northampton, Northants, NN4 8BQ

You can find this information here:-

www.workhouses.org

Put Peterborough in the search box.

Thankyou to Cathy and rootgatherer yes I am almost sure this is the right William but there are a couple of others that people seem to think could be right, can you find any earlier conections?

Peter

Peter Report 5 Oct 2010 11:03

Thanks also to you Kath I will try that.

I know what you mean Cath, it just seems logical that no matter were they came from I imagine being released as young men in this area they would probably stay around for a while, also I have had people say he was the son of a farmer, seems to me more likley for someone in those days to wind up as a chimney sweep would not have had that good of a start in life?
