Last year I asked for help for looking for the birth of John Grice x 2 ... I am still looking!
I just wondered if there were any new 'eyes' to help me???
Looking for birth record of:

John Grice born 1860 Marylebone
father stated on marriage cert as a
John Grice also, plumber..

not sure what other information is needed..

They are the only two anywhere near that date for London

Maybe he was'nt registered?

Where is St Giles... is that in marylebone..

Do you think it would be worth my while ordering the certs for St Giles and Islington... to see who the father was..

What results were you given when you asked previously?

No doubt someone told you then that until 1875 there were no penalties for NOT registering births, so his may simply not have been registered.

Is this his death J/F/M 1897 Barton Regis Gloucestershire.
6a 89 it says he was 31 born about 1866.

1866 Marylebone John R Grice O/N/D 1a 546.

You say his dad John was also a plumber,but John on 1891 census his son was a fishmonger.

Augusta grice nee Bayley married J/A/S 1897 to Harry fox.

1911 census Augusta and Henry Fox living in Islington.
It says they have been married for 23years = 1888 and have had 11 children 5 died.

So John and Abraham Grice were brought up as Fox.

Is that correct.

I think the J R Grice b1866 Marylebone is this one so may not be the correct one.

Then if his father died when he was young he may not have known what his name was and just made one up which was'nt unusual

Mary, this correct.. John Grice and Augusta Bayleys sons John and Abraham were both brought up as Fox....

I assumed John Grice was born in 1860 as on his marriage cert he stated he was 23 and this was 1883.....

his father might have died young, OR he might have been illegimate


and made up the name for his marriage certificate


Not unusual, 'cos it looks better for the in-laws!


The name John Grice MIGHT be completely made up ....... or it might be the name of a relative or his grandfather


Regarding his age ............... 23 in 1883 could mean he was born in 1859 or 1860 depending on the time of year of the marriage vs his birthday


He might also have lied about his age, making himself younger or older



My own grandparents said they were 21 and 19 on their marriage certificate ....... they were actually just turned 20 and 17. I have their birth certificates to prove it!!

how old does Augusta say she is on her marriage certificate?

I'm getting a suspicion that they BOTH might have lied about their ages


I've found references that say Augusta was born in 1864 .......... including freebmd.org.uk


she was married in 1883 ............. so that means she was 19 when she married


if the death certificate is correct, John was born ca 1865/66 ................ then he was only about 17



BOTH would have needed parental permission to marry as minors

............. but not if they said they were over 21.
