There's a couple more cemeteries in the left margin, but the above is the one I usually need.

Sue, I have a friend who volunteers in the History shop and is always willing to do look ups. I can also get there myself. The Wigan world website is a good place to see what is available on record. Cx

The parish pages for Upholland and Wigan on lan-opc site will tell you what records are available and which are online. If the years you want have not yet been transcribed you can email the online parish clerk who will look them up for you. The email link is on the left of the parish page.

Cynthia and mgnv

Many thanks for this information--it narrows the search further. I should probably have found this out for myself, but I'm new to this game and to computers, so your help is much appreciated.

Cynthia--is "Wigan History Shop" a physical place, or a web-site?

Thanks, Susi

Cynthia makes a good point. Orrell's mid-way between Upholland and Wigan - I've got one family of nailers from Orrell who baptized half their kids at St Thomas, Upholland and half at All Saints, Wigan. (Mid-way's maybe too strong - it's nearer Upholland than Wigan.) Upholland rego's date back to 1600. Initially it was a chapelry of All Saints, Wigan, but became a parish in the mid 1600s.

I think Orrell came under Upholland at one time so may be worth checking their records on lancs online parish clerk site also. The parish church of Orrell is St. Lukes which I think was built towards the end of the 1800's. Wigan History shop may hold some records.

Lewis (1848) says:

ORRELL, a township, in the parish and union of Wigan, hundred of West Derby, S. division of Lancashire, 3ΒΌ miles (W.) from Wigan, on the road to Ormskirk
http://www.british-history.ac.uk/source.aspx?pubid=445

so there'ld be no seperate registers for Orrell that early. Wigan (All Saints)'s date from 1580.
