Gillian, I agree with other posters that the only way to go back accurately is to buy Christopher and Ellen's marriage certificate to find out their fathers names and occupations.

The parents of Ellen on the ancestry tree are unconfirmed as William & Susannah. I have shown an alternative as James & Mary. Clark(e) is such a common name that it would be easy to follow the wrong line. The name could have been spelt differently on census & certificates

Gillian, I think to try to get back with any further accuracy, you need Ellen's marriage certificate to verify her father's name and occupation.

The reference to order this from GRO is:

Marriages Jun 1892
CLARK Ellen W. Derby 8b 549
OLDFIELD Christopher W. Derby 8b 549

There is the tree mentioned on Ancestry that gives her parents names but there are no references or sources given to back that up, so you can't be sure that it's accurate.

Hello Everyone,
i am finding it difficult to find the Marriage Details On 'William Clark' born in 1834, And 'Susannah' both born in portsmouth. One of the main reasons why im shearching is because i want to find out susannah's maiden name there ocupations. They had a daughter name of an 'Ellen Clark' Who later married a 'Christopher Oldfield'.

Many Thanks
Gillian

You do need the copy of Ellen marriage certificate to confirm the name & occupation of her father but I would say this was a strong possibility

is there a column on some (all?) census images - not on the transcriptions - which gives some disabilities?

MarieCeleste Report 27 Oct 2010 18:56

Hi Gillian, you're very welcome.

Again on Ancestry, there is a tree that says Ellen's parents were William S Clark 1834 and Susannah 1833. There's nothing to verify this, though.

I'd recommend getting a copy of Christopher and Ellen's marriage certificate to double check who her father was.

Sadly, I'm not sure of any way of accessing old medical records which may have been of help to you. However, there may be someone who has further ideas.

Christopher is with John 1844 and Alice on 1891 census.

There doesn't seem to be another christopher in same time frame so the info on tree looks likely.

According to a tree on Ancestry (unsourced) Christopher's parents were John Oldfield 1844 and Alice Kirby 1845.

Using FreeBMD http://www.freebmd.org.uk and census records you should be able to verify this (perhaps need to buy some certificates along the way).
