Christian, if you are related to him, *you* should give *us* the information you have -- who he was married to, for instance. His marriage certificate would give his father's name, the first thing you need if you want to trace his ancestors, if that's what you want to do.

Knowing how he is connected with you will also provide information that can be useful in searches.

The chance of someone who has knowledge of him ever seeing your post is slim to nil. Other members might be able to help find information, if we know what you're looking for, and what you have so we don't spend time "finding" it.

Many thanks for your reply. I have James marriage certificate to Mary McCarthy 1893 and the death certificate you mention. I cannot find a birth certificate for 1853. James was married before but don't know to whom. He had two children with Mary, Ellen and Julia my grandmother.

Gee Report 29 Oct 2010 18:12

On the marriage cert that you have....who is the father and what is his occupation please

Also the witnesses might help

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 29 Oct 2010 18:14

Have you found him in 1911? That ought to give his place of birth.

As you have his marriage certificate to his 2nd wife, then it should give his father's name + his occupation, and the witnesses may be related.

If we can't find a gro ref for a 1st marriage, it may be possible to find a PR of it. The name of the father will help to tie things together.

IF Mary Ann Johnson is James Adams' sister, we can try and track her back.
I am assuming she is Mrs Johnson after her marriage to a Mr Sayers.

Barnett Richard Stepney 1c 638
Cormack Mary Jane Stepney 1c 638
xxx Johnson Stephen Stepney 1c 638
xxx Sayers Mary Ann Stepney 1c 638

and this could be the birth of Robert:

giving this census, with an Adams connection:

patchem Report 5 Nov 2010 17:50

Do you mean this 1861 census?:
1861 England Census

What is Mary's Father's name on the marriage certificate?
Thanks

On the death certificate it refers to J Adams, son. Do you have any information about this son?
Thanks

Christian

Christian Report 6 Nov 2010 07:10

Sorry forget to add that it is Daniel McCarthy. I know that Mary McCarthy was born in Ireland but have no knowledge of the whereabouts except it was thought it was Eire as opposed to what we call Northern Ireland now but no proof. I do not have any info regarding J Adams the son, he must have been from the first marriage. I will have to check later census returns to see if there is a James Adams with a son J Adams.

Vanessa Report 6 Nov 2010 08:11

Hi, Christian.
Do you know if Mary , mother of Julia and Ellen died before 1901 census? Would it fit with what you know of the family ? The girls appear to be in an orphanage and then living with their aunt , as found previously. Did James go on to marry again?

According to free bmd there is no death of the correct age in London for a Mary Adams until 1904 ( from after date of marriage )

Best wishes

Christian Report 7 Nov 2010 20:51

Do not know when Mary died except that she was alive in the 1920/30's as my father who was born in 1918 remembers her as did some of his siblings. She was not living with her husband do not know why. The marriage certificate of 1893 said she was 23 so that could make a dob about 1870. One of my cousins thought she was about 66 when she died but not sure. She was a Catholic and my father's family when they visited her always came home wet because she had splashed Holy Water on them as she did not like their father who was not a Catholic!
Why Ellen and Julia where in an orphanage we do not know why as we are sure that both parents were alive.
Do not know if James married again.
Thank you all for your help.
