Isobel Report 8 Nov 2010 16:22

Can't find the family on 1861 Scottish Census. Elizabeth had married by then. Mary might have been out of the house by then too but Ann would only have been 11. I think it's the spelling of the name that's causing the problems. Looked on SP for marriages deaths etc also Ann's birth 1850-1851 in Hamilton, Lanarkshire can't find it. Girls can you help?

Isobel Report 8 Nov 2010 15:46

hi girls,
found John Malee with wife Catherine from Longford Ireland on 1851 census only they are listed as Milly they have a daughter Elizabeth aged 12 which would tie in as she married in 1855 aged 16. Take a look and see what you think John Milly 1816 Ireland living in Hamilton Elizabeth born Longford and Mary aged 9 Longford, Ann aged 1 born Hamilton, Lanarkshire

Hi Dee
Holytown is where the family settled when they came to Scotland so Biddy could be the Mother, will look further and let you know.

Well, I have had a look but I think your best bet, as suggested, would be to ask for a re-scan.

The one maiden name is certainly Nary but the other looks more to me like Biddy DAvlin, rather than DEvlin. It is not clear enough though to be sure I am afraid.

It certainly seems to be Da?lin.

Let us know how you get on.

P.S.
I don't know if Thomas's family came over from Ireland with him,?, but there is a Biddy Downs on Scotland Census?

Hi Cathy
It is Newtonforbes, thanks for that. Okay that only leaves the first name of Devlin is it Biddy Betty Betsy. Can't find the dropdown box for illegible image? Will send an email tomorrow to the Support Team. Thanks for your help.

Cathy

Cathy Report 7 Nov 2010 21:54

I thought the other name began with Da at first but then couldn't find an Irish surname beginning with that to fit and the nearest I came up with was Devlin too.

Newtonforbes? for the place in Longford?

Yay.....just checked and there is a place called Newtonforbes in Co Longford :-)

It's a while since I did it but if you go to FAQ's and click on downloading and viewing images and then scroll down to

I can't read the information on this image. What should I do?
It comes up with this:

"Please contact our customer support selecting the "Illegible Image" option from the Issue dropdown box on the contact form. In the "Description" field please state as much information you can about the image e.g. name, year, GROS/NAS reference number and the type of image."

Have a go with that anyway because even if you guess the right names it looks much better when it is rescanned especially if you want to put them on your tree as I do...

Cathy

Cathy Report 7 Nov 2010 21:15

Hi Isobel,

I think it's looks like Nary if it's the top marriage you are meaning, but you can get scotlandspeople to do a rescan. I've had quite a few done!
