I only found out a week ago that he was born in Dumfries. I dont have ancestry at the moment as I cant afford it! On all the census returns it always say's Born Scotland. I typed his name in to Genes 1911 mini search you can do for free and this is how I found out where in Scotland he was born. Thank you for all your help you are very kind |

Tracey, just my opinion - but i think he would have reverted to the surname he was born with. (That's certainly what happened with stepchildren in my own family - they're often listed in the stepfather's name whilst they're young). |

Can't find a marriage for Mary Ann to Thomas - as she'd been married before they may not have bothered (living together was not uncommon in those days). |

Have you got your Great Grandmother's ( Annie May Smith b1870 Dalston Cumberland) birth certificate, as this will tell you Mary Ann's maiden name? |

Please could someone help? Thomas was the eldest son of Mary Ann (possibly Carleton) She then went on to marry Thomas Smith b1822 Dumfries Scotland I am not sure if she was married to Thomas' father or he was illigitamate?? They then had 11 more children including my Great Grandmother Annie May Smith b1870 Dalston Cumberland. The family came to live in Fourstones near Hexham in Northumberland. They lived at Frankham Fell. I have searched in vain to find out what happened to Thomas Carlton Smith I dont know weather he moved back to Cumberland or stayed in the Hexham area?? I would love to know who he married and where he lived.I also can't find the Marr for Mary Ann and My Great x2 Grandfather Thomas Smith? Any help anyone could give me would be wonderful Thank you |
