First appears on the 1881 census in Glossop, Derbyshire, born 1841 in N Wales, Flint, with second wife Margaret b 1839 in Ribchester, Lancashire. I have a full history of her, it is John who is "missing". This couple married in Dec 1890, both widowed. I know that is true of Margaret. But by 1890 they had 3 children together, the eldest 16 years old. They married in Stockport, Cheshire, not locally, I assume to hide the fact that they weren't already married from neigbours.

On marriage John is a Stone Mason, as he is in 1881 and subsequently, and his father is named as Peter Davis, Quarryman.

In 1891, he states he is born Llanasa, Flintshire.

I cannot find a John Davies in Flintshire with a father Peter, a Quarryman. I cannot find a first marriage for him.

Can you help please?

Little Lost

Little Lost Report 19 Nov 2010 06:37

are those children definately with the 2nd wife or could they be from his first marriage?

Astra

Astra Report 19 Nov 2010 07:40

This is a possibility for 1871. His wife was born in Llanasa but his birth place is noted as Halkyn. He is a Stone mason. But as you well know looking for the name Davies in Wales is like looking for a needle in a hay stack.
May be someone else will pick this up now as I have to get to work for a few hours.

To match the names to the marriage it looks as though he could have married Mary Oldfield in 1867 Holywell Volume 1b page 473

Her birth was 1843 in Holywell

Astra, I am going for your 1881 grandson, John, born 1876. Will try for the grandson's birth.

Scores to go at, so I will try the local register office at Hoywell.

Get back when I have info.

Worth a try I think. The only thing that bothered me about it was the date of birth. John and Margaret had a child born in 1875/6 so unless John's (Grandson) age is transcribed wrongly it would be a bit of a tight squeeze. But stranger things have happened. I couldn't find John in1891. Not with any certainty anyway.

Madmeg

Madmeg Report 20 Nov 2010 19:46

I like this Peter and Ann, cos amongst the many birth certs I have for John Davies b 1840, is one with parents Peter and Ann (nee Vaughan). I have never found this couple with a son John, but maybe a grandson John.......son of John?

I take your point, John and Margaret have Llewellyn b Mar Qtr 1876. Maybe the fact that John had two women pregnant at the same time was the cause of the breakdown of the marriage. Hey ho, who knows?

Madmeg

Madmeg Report 22 Nov 2010 19:42

Astra, tried the grandson with Flintshire Records. They have several, none that fit properly. However, they are prepared to search further. Stars reign supreme!

I'll never find him, methinks. I could cry!

Ah No. Don't do that. Computers and tears don't mix well. I'm going to be a little pressed for free time today but I will take another look around later to see what I can find for you.
Never give up! There is an answer out there somewhere. We just have to find it.

Madmeg Report 24 Nov 2010 23:52

Astra, it's actually glasses of white wine and keyboards that don't mix well. I've ruined a few, which is why I buy Tesco keyboards costing £3.99.

I think we are stuck with John Davies, and I'm sad cos he is "only" my gg grandfather, and I know all about him once he moved to Glossop. I have photos of his house, his place of work, I know where he is buried. Some of his step children went to the USA and became pioneers in the Paper business. I've got photos of all his ancestors. He's a real important person to me.

And his grandson, my grandad, whom I knew very well, was an ameteur pianist of extraordinary talent, and I just want to find his grandad.

But I think we are at the dead end.

Love

Margaret
