Astra

I was originally under the impression that it was my responsibility to tick, however ........................

I made that comment because several people (a couple known personally to me) have in fact found their threads ticked, when they have not ticked tthemselves, and when they do not feel that everyhting has been found!

and they are finding it impossible to get the ticks removed!

another little gremlin I suppose!

That's good news Sylvia. I hope it works out to be correct.
It is not up to me to tick the thread as completed that is for you to do when you feel that everything has been found.

Astra

Thank you, but I have already been sent a re-scanned copy of that marriage registration. It is much clearer than what has been seen so fat, and answers some of the questions we had

Edward Carden's occupation was Stereotyper, and his mother's maiden name was Rodgers

..... so it may well be that those censuses for Cardens in Lancshire are correct.

Please do not however tick this thread as completed

................ I need more evidence to be sure that Lancashire and subsequent return to Greenock are correct.

Thank you for your work

Have done that today. So let's wait and see if they can get a better image for us.

Yes please ..... that would be good, if they can do that

Astra Report 22 Nov 2010 18:41

Did you want me to ask for a better scan of the marriage image so that we can perhaps see her maiden name a little better. I understand from a message sent by FBG that you can do that.

Hi Astra

Thank you, I had an excellent night's sleep ..... but it's flippin' cold here!

Interesting!

so far as I understood from what my sis-i-law Betty said ........... her parents Edward and Jessie were the first members of the family to leave Greenock and Scotland to live in England. They moved down to the Ashton-under-Lyme area sometime in the late 1930s or possibly early 1940s ............ presumably so that Edward could find work.

Betty only ever mentioned having aunts, uncles and cousins in Greenock and area.

Last night someone on GR emailed me a copy of the Marriage Registration for a James Beattie and Elizabeth Hutchinson, Greenock, 27 Febrauary 1891. James was a Distillery Carter.

I also received pms from other GR members who had found little snippets of information in Greenock records ............... including the 1901 Scotland Census for James and Elizabeth Beattie, with Elizabeth shown as born in Ireland, and an Elizabeth Hutcheson b in Ireland, living in Greenock on the 1881 Scottish Census. Someone else has found deaths of some of the Beatties.

No-one seems to found anything on the Cardens ............... so the Lancs connection might be one lead to follow up.

Thank you

There is a death in the September Qtr. of 1914 of a James Carden in Blackburn age 56 which looks about right. So if this is your Edward and he married 13 years later maybe he changed his Father's occupation to what the rest of the family did ie. working in the Mill either because he thought Hawker was inappropriate or he just didn't know because his father never resided with the family after his birth.

In 1901 James is in a Lodging House in what appears to be the same street as his family, Mount Pleasant. Maybe there just wasn't room for him at home!

Just wondering about this.
There is a marriage in Burnley Lancashire in 1871 between James Carden and Elizabeth Rodgers March Qtr. 8E 316. Looking at the Scottish marriage registration again her name could well be Rodgers. They had a son Edward in 1897 as well as others. I will post the census details for you shortly. The only problem is that James is a Hawker which doesn't match with the marriage cert.

This will be Edward's birth registration as they were living in Blackburn at the time and it would explain why there is no birth registration in Scotland.

Name: CARDEN, Edward
Registration District: Blackburn
County: Lancashire
Year of Registration: 1897
Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun
Volume No: 8E
Page No: 425

After a quick search I can't locate a birth for Edward but I will take another look later after work. Or someone else may pick this up while I am away.

Thank you very much, Astra

Just caught this before going to bed ..... it's not that far off midnight over here!

I did wonder if the name might be Hutchinson rather than Hutchison!

I'll check back in several hours to see if you or any of the others have managed to find anyhting about Edward Carden

my sis-i- is pretty useless at knowing helpful stuff ............. and anyway, she's in a different country.

You are right about themarriage details being a poor image. It is very difficult to read and i can't make out anything other than what you already have.
27thFebruary 1891 is the date of her parents marriage in Greenock. James Beattie to Elizabeth HutchiNson. Note the N. She was 26 and he was 34. Father William Hutchinson occupation Gardener deceased Mother Elizabeth MS Hall,
His father William Beattie. Occupation Farmer. His mother Jane Beattie MS Armstrong (Deceased.

My sister-in-law was born in Greenock Scotland in 1930.

Last year a member helped me find her birth, the births of her siblings, and her parents marriage on SP ............... but obviously couldn't go on spending his own money!

1. Could you please check the image of the marriage of Edward Carden to Jessie Beattie

The image that he saw was very poor, and this was our interpretation of it

30th June 1927
At 29 Marheld (??) St, Greenock
After Banns

Edward
Bachelor
?? occupation (can’t read)
Address:- 52 Inverkip (??) Street, Greenock
Father:- James Carden, Mill Carder (deceased)
Mother:- Elizabeth Carden ???nt or nee ledger or Pedger (deceased)

Jessie
Spinster
No occupation given
Address:- 21 Bearhope (??) Street, Greenock
Father:- James Beattie, Railway Carter (deceased)
Mother:- Elizabeth Beattie, nt (?nee) Hutchison

Witnesses:- James H Beattie, 21 Beahope Street, Greenock, and Jane Beattie (same address)

Signed on July 1st 1927

Can any of you read it more clearly?

2. On Jessie Beattie's birth certificate it says:-

March 13 1904, 9:45 pm
21 Bearhope Street, Greenock
Father:- James Beattie, Railway Carter
Mother:- Elizabeth Beattie, m.c Hutchison
1891 February 27, Wish, Greenock (whose b’date is this, or marriage??)

Registered March 23 1904

Is that 1891 date, the date her parents got married?

If so, can you find that and give me the information on it, please.

3. Can you find anything on SP for Edward Carden, and or his parents?

Sis-i-l doesn't know whether he was also born in Greenock, or elsewhere in Scotland

Thnak you
