Trying to find Christina SCOBBIE

Hi Catherine. Thanks for checking this out. That would explain why Mary wasn't on the next census in 1851and why Christina was free to marry Francis Wright in 1849. How tragic.

Mary is the daughter of Alexander in the death records of 1843.

The problem with the Old Parish Records is that not all marriages, indeed births or deaths are recorded. I saw the marriage you mention, although there is no record of the Alexander/Christiina wedding, it doesn't meanit didn't happen.

Hi Catherine
Had a look through the Old Parish records - oddly enough Alexander Duncan married a MARGARET Scobbie in Jan 1839. And none of the James Scobbies who married in the period 1780-1820 in the whole of Scotland were married to anyone with the forename Mary. So frustrating when records don't tie up!!! Maybe James and his daughter wanted to cover their tracks with a shed load of red herrings. I think I maybe need to accept that it's a mystery that will never be solved. Grrrrrrrrrrr.
Cheers.

Difficult to know what happened to Alexander and Mary as registration not until 1855. The reason I highlighted Mary Mercer is IGI has a lot of births in Larbert around the same time. Could not find any other James Scobbie or Mary. Realise it's a bit random.

Thanks so much for the additional info. Oh my goodness - 2 census entries for 1841 both at Carron Shore and involving two different Christina Duncans! Given that the Christina who is married to Alexander Duncan has the correct maiden name, then this would seem to be the right one. Strange though that Christina married Francis Wright in 1849 i.e only 8 years later. What happened to Alexander and Mary?
Christina died in 1887 and her death entry shows her father as James Scobbie a merchant seaman - her mother is Mary but I couldn't make out the handwriting for the surname. So can I ask where you found the name Mercer? Any idea where James and Mary came from?
I am so grateful for you help and that of the others. Nobody in my tree has cost me so much time, money and trouble as Christina Scobbie. I would love to tie up the loose ends.
Cheers.

Parents could be James Scobbie and Mary Mercer.

This may be the birth of your Christina's daughter Mary.

Thanks for the info. I've searched on births for Christina Duncan between 1800 and 1815 but there are only 2 and these occurred in Kirkcudbright and Angus which contradicts her saying she was born in Stirlingshire. So the Christina Duncan on the census acquired the surname Duncan at some point but not at birth. As for marriage to John Duncan - no way. The only John Duncan marriage which took place between 1800 and 1841was in 1816 at which point Christina was only 5 or thereabouts. So I'm going to make the assumption that she was living with John in her capacity as childless widow of a son of his. What a jigsaw puzzle!

At a guess, I would suggest Charles Glass was a ... Free Church Minister.

Yes it sounds as though Charles Glass was probably just passing through Carron Shore in 1841, before setting up his own household in his home turf of Kincardineshire. I am intrigued by his occupation as a Fred Chwick Minister - which church would that be?
Getting back to Christina Scobbie/ Duncan/ Wright - do you think she (at the age of 30) was married to the 65 year old John Duncan or could she have been married to a son of his who has died? The plot thickens!

In 1841 John Duncan is listed as a farmer, Charles Glass is a preacher and Archibald Newton was an ag lab. So maybe Charles was a visiting preacher

Hi Ginny
Brilliant! Yes - this all looks like her. I do find the 1841 census entry rather intriguing - all those different ages and surnames in one household - what was going on there I wonder? I have quite a few more gaps to fill in the family tree for relatives who were around before the introduction of the statutory records in 1855 - it's a pity that the earliest census we have is 1841.
Anyway, thanks so much for your help.

Christina Scobbie c1810-1887. Larbert/ Falkirk area. Have gone up many dead ends with this search as there are a few with the same name in the same area. Her parents were James and Mary Scobbie. Christina may have had 2 marriages - firstly to a DUNCAN and then to Francis WRIGHT in 1849. Their daughter Mary Wright was my great grandmother. Would love to know more about Christina and her parents as she sounds like a character!
Cheers.
