Birth certificates for Henry Bygrave, 1859 and Hannah Elizabeth Bygrave, 1858, show their parents to be Henry Bygrave and Sarah Ann Bygrave, formerly SMITH. I have all the censuses bar 1851. |

Thank you, Ginny and Rose. Yes, I have seen that Haggerston entry but can't confirm that that Henry is my gg gr'father as his age varies on the censuses from 1825-1828. Really not quite sure how I could ascertain his birth and/or parents. |

Makes me wonder if he is the one who married Eliza Dove in 1849 and that's why we can't find his marriage to Sarah. Can't seem to find Eliza after 1851. |

I can't see a death for Eliza Bygrave in the right area. So perhaps he wasn't free to marry Sarah. |

No, Rose, I have already examined that possibility very closely, and was challenged by the correct descendants of Eliza Dove! Have examined the Censuses for the Bygrave/Dove and reached the same conclusions. Still not knowing Sarah's former name, I sent for the birth certs of young Henry and his sister, Hannah which is how I arrived at Sarah Ann Smith. Is it possible that marriages slip by in BMD records? I don't suppose it's impossible that he married Smith after Dove but no record?? |

Pam, The replies crossed. Yes, I have considered that Sarah Ann and Henry were not in a legal marriage. I would imagine that Victorian people then could, for the sake of propriety, answer censuses dishonestly. It's a mystery! |

Thanks, Rose. That second baptism will be for Hannah Elizabeth. Her birth cert shows d.o.b. 10 May 1858. I don't recall Eliza Dove's descendants off the cuff. |

The marriage for Henry Bygrave to Eliza Dove shows (unclearly) his age as possibly being 26 which would have him born 1823 but then censuses with Henry and Sarah Ann show him as being born 1825-1828, hence the inconsistency! In the 1849 marriage (possbly December-unclear) it describes him as a Rope Maker living at 26 Pitt St, father: William Bygrave, Rope Maker. |
