HI,
Can someone with access to Australian records please help me with this one.
I have found an ancestor who was transported to New South Wales in 1834
I have found his certificate of freedom ,a genes member sent it to me.On that his Occupation is given as "Sweep"

My ancestor is Thomas Emmerson Chandler born Cambridgeshire 1816.
He was convicted of Larceny in Sussex in 1833 and held aboard a prison hulk for three months, before being transported on the "Surrey" in 1834

Thomas Emmerson Chandler
Vessel: Surrey
Convicted Date: 14 Dec 1833
Voyage Date: 9 Apr 1834
Colony: New South Wales
Piece: HO 11/9
Place of Conviction: Sussex, England

He received his freedom certificate on the 4th June 1841 his prison no/34/1741

I would love to know if he came back to England or settled over there.

His brother John named my 3x grandfather after him and his middle name has been handed down throughout the family.

Any help or suggestions of how i could get this info would be very much appreciated

Thanks
Blue

Well there is no death for him back in England. There are no marriages or deaths in New South Wales for a Thomas Emmerson Chandler. It is possible he went to another state in Australia or elsewhere.

No results for a Thomas Emerson / Emmerson Chandler in Victoria, Aus.

This is a good link for various indexes:

I think on balance you are likely to find him in Australia..because a large number of convicts received their Freedom Papers after having worked in the local community, and literally earned their freedom..they then simply went on with the same lifestyle as free men/women..having married and or built up a life for themselves and their families..........very few ex convicts..proportionately speaking, bothered to return to the UK.

Derek.

Thanks everyone for trying to help me out.
I agree with Derek,i think he probably stayed there.

I Can't be sure of his parents names .
His brother John Chandler on one census gives his place of birth as Blunham. On other census he says Huntingdonshire.Thomas Emmerson Chandler gives his place of birth on the criminal records and freedom papers as Cambridgeshire.
I've only found one parish record for a John Richardson Chandler born in the correct time frame, not far from Blunham, in a place called Bluntisham

The parents on that record are Charles Richardson Chandler and Honour.

All i now about Thomas really is what is on the criminal records etc and on all of them he gives his middle name the other Thomas Chandlers on the criminal records just say Thomas Chandler.

Both of John's children were born in Brighton Emma 1836 and Thomas Emmerson Chandler in 1838

I sound like i'm babbling now so I'll stop!

I shall try to find TonyOz and ask if he can help.

Thanks all again

Hi again,
it's funny how just mulling things over with other people help.
Thankfully i have a Thomas emmerson born 1838 in Brighton and wife Mary Ann Hunt on census plus baps of their children.
One of their sons is also called John Richardson Chandler born 1860 in London.
So I'm thinking now that the baptism in Bluntisham could be my John,as we have the Richardson middlename repeating down the line.

I can't find Thomas emmerson and Mary hunt on London England Banns and marriages, but have found their marriage on bmd June,London,Middlesex England (Strand) .So I suppose I shall have to buy that cert and hopefully his fathers name will be John Richardson Chandler.

Phew!

Hello Blue, I can't see anything coming up on above link (Cambridgeshire Baptisms and Burials 1801 - 1837)

Bluntisham records are held at Huntingdon Records Office, it's on the Cambs./Hunts. border, he might not have been baptised.
Will keep a look out for you :-)
