How can I find out if my family were involved in any groups or clubs in Preston Lancashire in the 1800's? Are there any websites where I can check this?

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 29 Dec 2010 18:06

what kind of clubs and groups are you referring to?

Michaela

Michaela Report 29 Dec 2010 18:20

I don't really know. I was just hoping to find something relating to my family. Perhaps any church groups, or to see if they had any hobbies or interests. Sorry to be a bit vague, but I'm struggling to find out any info on one member of my family and this was one idea that may throw up a few clues. Thanks

care to give details of this person?

Michaela

Michaela Report 29 Dec 2010 18:59

It's William Rigby born 1804 Woodplumpton. Lancashire Ann has been trying to find info on him for me that was why I didn't post his name. So far we haven't been able to find much. But the search goes on! Thankyou.

No sorry. He died in 1859. I really didn't want to post his name twice as this would confuse where we are at, so I apologise. I just thought that if I could try and locate any clubs that he might have been involved in it may give me some vital info to go further. It was just an idea!

Michaela

Michaela Report 29 Dec 2010 20:01

Would there be any schools listed in that area for that period. Sorry to be so confusing.

jax Report 29 Dec 2010 21:01

I'm a bit confused here...So you are looking for someones hobbies and interests in the early part of the 19th centary?? So you have his death cert? as William Rigby seems a common name in that area

jax

With that occupation and only having one person working for him I doubt if he had time for interests

Only the rich had time for hobbies in those days........everyone else was too busy trying just to exist.

the only society I can think of (Woodplumpton even today is very small) is maybe the Young Farmers. Not sure when it was formed though, it still has a branch in the area today. There was education in the early 1800's

"The earliest school in the Parish is known from 1622 when two brothers named Boulton were licensed teachers. Then in 1661, Alice Nicholson of Bartle gave £100 by deed for the maintenance of a free school within the Manor Woodplumpton. It is recorded that school house was built in 1664 by date over door with the initials A.N., the founder. This school house can still be found in Rosemary Lane Bartle. The Charity Commissioners reported that sixty children attended in 1824. This school closed in 1879 and a new County school opened in Catforth in 1874 now a County Primary School."

whether there are any records I do not know. I can't get into the record office catalogue at the moment to look. There seems to be one or two problems on the site this week, the libraries site also appears to be off-line

Sorry not to be in touch for a while. Thank you for the help that you have given me. I think I'm clutching at straws here, getting desperate really to find something on him. Don't know where to turn next. Think we are at the end of the line! THANK YOU SO MUCH.

You still haven't really given any idea of what you are trying to find out

1851 census has been posted so you know his wife's name....and that of a son.

If you don't say what you're looking for, how can people advise or help you....................

BUT.........if you already have a thread about this man....WHY duplicate?

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 13 Jan 2011 23:18

Flick - this was not intended as a duplicate

The original post was just asking about clubs not for information on any family so Michaela stated exactly what she was looking for

"I really didn't want to post his name twice as this would confuse where we are at, so I apologise. I just thought that if I could try and locate any clubs that he might have been involved in it may give me some vital info to go further. It was just an idea!"

Youse guys ...

I'm not a fan of the hypothetical question that leads to doing something all over again, far from it. But Michaela strove not to do that!

So I went looking for the thread -- and here's the link (which it might have helped to post right off!) -- or anyone who wants to dive in (I think I won't ;) ):

Ann

It may not, as you surmise, have been 'intended' to be a duplicate, but it was inevitable that it would turn into one.

As soon as the OP referred to a 'particular family member'............the ensuing questions and answers guaranteed that.

Having seen that the original thread stretches to four pages, I'm bowing out

Sorry to have caused all the misunderstanding, it wasn't intentional.
