That's fascinating Jax. The area is right, the ages are about right. Not too sure about the professor of music though - he was definately a Cooper on his marriage cert. . Could the name for the child with ?? be Susan?

I've no idea who Myna would be - theres an Agnes Barling and a Henry Barling born Bethnal Green Sep 1870 - but no corresponding deaths. Any idea?

Susan Burgess (my great aunt) married John William BARLING in 1864. He died in 1879. In 1881 Susan is with most of her children in Bethnal Green BUT I cannot find them in the 1871 census at all nor in subsequent ones. Where were they all? His occupation on children's baptisms indicates he was originally a Cooper then a Pianforte tuner and maker, then a Musician! I wondered if I had the right person but it seems so.

Children were:
John William b 1866 d 1875
Susan Jane b 1867
Florence Maria b 1869
William b 1871
Albert b 1873
Arthur b 1875
Lydia b 1877
Rueben b 1879 d 1881

All except John William (obviously) and Lydia are with Susan in 1881. Lydia is also a bit of a mystery - the only death I could find was for 1889 - so if that is right, where was she in 1881?

Addresses on baptisms also indicate they stayed around Bethnal Green - Union St/Globe Road/Globe Lane is often given - but different house numbers each time!

I have worked out that Florence Maria married a William Valentine Cross in 1894 so don't need any further info about her.

Hope this all helps. it's the 1871 census I am most interested in but 1891 and 1901 would be useful too. I suspect it's a case of poor transription or poor spelling but you lot are far better at that sort of thing than I am!

Many thanks

Gai
