I note that there were baptisms for Mary A daughter of Jeremiah and Mary Fenn 1821, and Mary daughter of Jeremiah and Ann for both 1808 and 1818. According to Camdex Mary Fenn married William Vail 1838, and another Mary Fenn married Robert Hitch 1845. To complicate the position further a Mary Ann Fenn married George Murrey 1836 according to I.G.I. All these events took place at Holy Trinity Ely. Can anyone please identify the respective Marys and their parents? I also note that the 1841 census shows Mary Murry (20)at Backhill and 1851 Mary Ann Murry (widow 32) at Bridge Road which is the address on Alice Murrey's birth certificate. The 1871 census shows Mary Murray at Broad Street with her youngest daughter Emma (15) |

Thank you Helen,we have always had difficulties with the spelling of Murrey. In fact we have a bible which belonged to George's daughter Alice, in which someone has tried to pick out the A to alter it to an E or vice versa. I think it very likely that your baptism entry is the correct George as such census as I have been able to trace support both George and Mary as born c1818. Thank you so much for your interest. Regards Stan. |

Hi Chris ,thanks for your input on the 1845 marriage. I have tried I.G.I. for the 1836 marriage of Mary Fenn and George Murrey , but the entry gives very little detail, only date and Holy Trinity Ely. Have you used some other source for your information , or just that it was post 1837? Thanks again Stan |

Hi Chris and Mike, thank you for your advices. It would appear my belief in the baptism of Mary Fenn was ill-founded.The one I am seeking certainly married George Murrey 1836 and had the various children listed in the previous messages. This is supported by Alice Murrey's birth certificate and later census returns for Mary's other children. However,I note on other trees Mary the daughter of Ann and Jeremiah Fenn married 1838 William Vail or 1845 Francis Hitch. Back to square one but thanks for your interest. Regards Stan |

In 1881 she wasn't necessarily called Marian. |

Since receiving advice re. Mary Fenn 8/1/2011, I have traced a 1841 census entry for Backhill, Ely Trinity showing Elizabeth Murry(60) Robert(30) George(20) and Mary(20) and am wondering if this could be the Mary Fenn I am seeking who married George Murrey Ely 7/11/1836. I believe Mary was baptised Ely 9/12/1818. The only other possible trace I have of Mary is the 1871 census where there is an entry for Mary Murrey widow (52) and her daughter Emma (15) living at 119 Broad Street Ely Trinity. I have a birth certificate for Alice Murrey,29/10/1852,showing her mother Mary Murrey formerly Fenn, place of birth Bridge Road,Ely Trinity. Mary Fenn was my great great grandmother and I should be pleased to confirm her date of birth, and possibly discover the identity of her parents .Similarly I would like to learn more of George Murrey and his family. I propose to visit Ely in the near future, and should welcome any advice on the best way to proceed. Is it, for instance, possible to make an appointment to view parish church records? Any help wil be much appreciated Stan |

Hi Mike, after having posted the original message I went back to Ronnie Booth's tree to find that he has updated his entry to show that Mary(1843) was indeed christened Mary Ann,and by 1881 when she was living with her sister Harriet she was called Marian. I was on the sister-in-law tack, again showing my inexperience. Many thanks for your interest and advice Stan. |

There are also these births but you would need the certs to see if they are children of George and Mary |

Could it possibly be Mary Ann not Marian? |

Thanks Mike, I have been unable to trace either on any census. I understand that certain census returns for Ely Trinity have gone adrift. I have traced two of their daughters Alice Prior (1852) and Harriet Tullett(1850) both born in Ely, in London areas 1881 and 1891. I believe there were other children John , Emma and possibly others including a Marian.Regards Stan |
