Having spoken to my sister-in-law yesterday, we are now thinking that the French/Canadian artist rumoured to be their grandad could possibly be their great grandad. The name Clayton was very rare in England in the 1800's, and I thought he would be easy to find... how wrong was I. I now need to find out how to try and trace it via Canadian records maybe? |

Thanks, I am going to Lincoln in a few weeks, and together with my sister-in-law we are going to spend a day in the archive centre there.... much cheaper to drive up there than the phone calls and cost of certificates etc lol xxxx |

To check out the occupants you would have to look at the electoral register - normally held at nearest main library. It would only show men over 21 and women over 30 though. |

Thank you all, on the marriage certificate harry and martha were living at 21a waterside south, lincoln. Not sure how to find out whether the family lived there or not. Martha was still living there when Harry died in 1930, although he died in a workhouse hospital nearby of a stroke, martha was 22 and had a 2 year old son, which in the depression of 1930 muct have been very tough indeed.. maybe thats why she made Harry's life a misery; because his dad died and left her to cope... who knows... i will keep digging xxx |

Who were the witnesses on the marriage cert. I have noticed that on many marriage certs for my lot, the witnesses are often kin. You could try searching for the witness names and look for connections. |

Have you checked out Harry's address on his marriage cert on the off-chance he is living with his family? |

Just to say I've been through FreeBMD All events Mar 1860 to Dec 1950 for all named Clayton, all areas and got nowhere. I've looked for surnames that could have vaguely matched phonetically but nothing. |

Thats really strange, as my husbands family were lead to believe (possibly by their father) that his father was a Canadian/French artist. This is family folklore.... how would I research if this family came to England? If Clayton was a blacksmith in 1927, and still living, there must be records of him somewhere. This is becoming quite an obcession as my husbands faher knew nothing about his dad, as he died when he was 2, and he had a very difficult relationship with his mother Martha. The research I am doing is helping my husbands family piece together why their father never talked about his dad, they didnt know he had died young until i started researching. many thanks for you help, i do appreciate it x |

I am looking for any details at all about CLAYTON SILVER. He was my husband's G. Grandfather, and is named on the marriage certificate of his son, Harry Silver to Martha Brown on 4th December 1927, but I can't find any other records for him at all... According to the marriage certificate, he was a blacksmith and still alive in 1927. Harry lived in Lincoln, as did Martha so assume Clayton would have been in that area, but i have drawn a total blank.. help.... many thanks |
