Hi. Does anybody know of a website of Devon parish transcriptions? There isn't any Blackwill or Blackwell listed before 1730 on the west somerset site. The first entry appears to be the marriage of John to Margaret. Does that suggest they were from a different region? |

Michaela, the names of Margaret's parents are not foreign but written in Latin which was the norm in all parishes. Their names will be Hugh and Mary. Sorry if that has quashed any thoughts. There were several Careslake or Kerslake on the baptisms so I would think that her family possibly lived in Exton for at least one previous generation. |

Thanks everyone. The Bovey Tracey entry sounds interesting. Margarets parents had foreign sounding names, Hougonis and Mariae! Iwonder where they were from. Maybe another time eh! There is also a Langdon connection. Johns son Thomas married Ann Langdon in 1777. |

I found a marriage of a John Blackwell to an Elizabeth Putner in 1695 at Bovey Tracey in Devon. In the same batch there was a Mary Blackwill suggesting the name was entered as it sounded.- I only considered this because your John named his first child John, which is normally the man's father's name and Elizabeth because it is usually the name of the second girl in the naming order of things- however Margaret has not named the children after her parents-jle |

Thanks. There are Blackwells listed from Barnstaple Devon. Maybe the name changed over the years. |

There is nothing on the Exton baptisms around that date for the surname Blackwill but his marriage to Margaret in 1730 has nothing to suggest he wasn't of the same parish. I would think that he wasn't born in that parish otherwise there would be other members of the family entered on the register. This is speculation though. Perhaps he came to the parish with his parents/family as a child or came as an adult looking for work. -jle |

Just going back to the death of John in 1784 I think this now will be the death of John and Margarets son John who was born 1731.-j |

Just a little note that is added to the death of Margaret.24/3/1786 aged 80 ...."worn out with age" and just to confirm that John died at 86 with "old age and a fever". Which would suggest he was born 1705 or thereabouts.- jle |

Can anyone help me find the birth of John Blackwill. He married Margaret Careslake on 30.3.1730 at St Peters church Exton Somerset. He had several children, John b 1731, Ann b 1735, William b 1740, Elizabeth b 1743, Thomas b 1746, Andrew b 1748, Margaret b 1750, Jane b 1753, all baptised at Exton Somerset. I have a death for him, 1784, but not 100% sure it's him. Any help would be brilliant. Thank you |
