Was her mother married at the time? If so, is her husband down as the father? If this is the case, the husband may have asked to have his name removed from the register. The 18 would probably be the number in the records that the registrar kept of changes to original records. The Register office where the birth was recorded might be able to help.

If the father's name is not the husband, then unless the father attended at the registration, his name would not be able to be entered in the register.

The birth would not have been re-recorded in either circumstance - a birth can only have one entry.

Hi everyone, I have recently purchased my great aunts birth certificate and on reciept have found that my great aunts fathers name is crossed out. I know that my aunt was born out of wedlock and that my great grandmother gave her to her older sister to bring up but can't make out why the fathers name is crossed through, any ideas? There is also a number next to it (18), does this mean that the birth was re-recorded? I f anyone has any experience of this or can advise on what any of this means, I would be extremely grateful.
Many Thanks,
Chevaun.
